Re-bound in full black buckram "Whistler" printed in gilt on spine original wrappers preserved. The acrimony was brought on by Wilde's review of Whistler's so-called "Ten O'Clock" lecture. Interesting monogram printed in purple on first blank. Cloth a little rubbed at head and tail of spine and at corners. Wrappers slightly chipped and nicked at outer edges. Very good. Contains a review by Oscar Wilde on Whistler's famous "Ten O'Clock-Lecture" given on February 10 1885 in London. Among other critical remarks Whistler denounced art critics in his lecture and caused such a stir that he was asked to give his lecture in Oxford and Cambridge which resulted in a verbal exchange between Whistler and Wilde around aesthetical issues. Mason # 625. Wraps with wear along edges moderate and small chips and creasing on back cover fragile. Block age-toned. Wraps in overall fair interior in good condition. Privately Printed unknown

1902E7173Paris: Privately Printed 1902. First edition thus. vellum. Very Good. One of 500 unnumbered copies "for private circulation only among friends and subscribers". Full vellum line and lettered in black title on spine and large "O.W." on front cover. Top edge stained red and other edges uncut. Title page printed in red and black. Translated into English by Sebastian Melmoth pseudonym of Oscar Wilde. This is now considered to be a spurious Wilde piece; the Paris bookseller who printed it Charles Carrington apparently invented the Wilde connection in order to spur sales. The four page foreword has Wilde who had died two years earlier as its subject. A tight very good or a bit better example spine a bit darkened and some very light soilning to the vellum. Carrington's bookshop label is affixed to the rear free endpaper. Privately Printed unknown
