There are two iterations of this edition 750 in the British issue and another 500 for the United States. Each signed twice by Pogany first on the limitation page and then in pencil on the frontispiece etching. The work includes twelve tipped-in color plates mounted on tipped in backings numerous small tipped in decorative pieces braced with printed head and tail pieces. This was Pogany's second book for Harrap an earlier version of the same title printed in 1909 having established his reputation as a book illustrator. Pogany is said to have creditted Harrap for giving him his "first big chance." Minor shelf/edge wear spine evenly sunned else tight bright and unmarred. The back cover has an identical oval enclosing a snake entwined around a gilt wine glass. The spine with raised bands is elaborately gilt as are the dentelles; all edges gilt. London: George G. Top edge gilt the others untrimmed. Original illustrated end papers. A fine and truly handsome copy of this classic work and a remarkable survivor. The suede bindings of this period are fragile and prone to drying out often resulting in the suede perishing and the yapp edges splitting. Rare in this condition.</p> George G. A most attractive book both internally and externally.</p><p>This beautiful and lavishly illustrated book was issued in two forms: a a special signed edition of 525 signed copies bound in tan calf and b this in fact more attractive de luxe binding of full suede. The binding of the suede issue was fragile especially at the edges and copies as well preserved at this are rare.</p><p><br />The colophon at the end states "The letterpress and line illustrations were printed by Vincent Brooks Day and Son Ltd. and the four-colour plates by Benrose Dalziel Ltd. at London in the Year of Our Lord NCMX". <br />A trade edition was issued later considerably smaller in format and with the decoration on the pages greatly reduced but retaining the 20 tipped-in coloured plates. Painstakingly detailed and confident Pogány's drawings portray the true extent of his talent. The Ancient Mariner is recognised as his masterpiece.<br /><br />From 1924 Pogány worked as an art director on several Hollywood films including Fashions of 1934 and Dames.
