ORIGINAL PEN-AND-INK PORTRAITS OF THE MAD HATTER and THE MARCH HARE From his illustrated 1929 Lewis Carroll Alice's Adventures In Wonderland published by E. P. Dutton. These marvelous drawings illustrate "The Mad Tea Party" chapter and grace pages 102 and 103. The images are both 4.75" x 3.5" situated in two corners of a large sheet of 11" by 14" heavy art paper. Pogány has printed his name in full on the March Hare drawing at the top right and initialed the Mad Hatter drawing at the lower left. His lightly penciled outline and notations can also be seen. 1929002018New York 1929. Willy Pogány Hungarian/American 1882-1955. ORIGINAL PEN-AND-INK PORTRAIT OF THE MAD HATTER From his illustrated 1929 Alice's Adventures In Wonderland published by E. P. Dutton. This marvelous drawing is that illustrating "Who Stole the Tarts" from Chapter 11 page 172 wherein The Queen of Hearts is accusing the Mad Hatter of the crime. Pogany's version has the Mad Hatter trembling with fear as he clutches his tea cup and toast. The image is 4.75" x 3.5" situated in one corner of a large sheet of 11" by 14" heavy art paper. Pogány has initialed the drawing at the lower right. His lightly penciled outline and notations can also be seen. The detail of the drawing which is sharply inked and in Very Good condition indeed is spectacular in comparison to the actual printed illustration see our photo of the actual size of the book image to compare. We originally saw this illustration in The Book Sail's 16th Anniversary Catalogue way back in 1984. It's our pleasure to finally be able to both handle it and find it a good home. Signed. Unbound. He also worked prolifically as a sculptor painter portraitist and muralist and even briefly as a designer of stage sets and costumes. During the 1930s Pogány moved to Los Angeles where he found employment as an art director in Hollywood-likely the time period in which this drawing was created. <br /> <br /> Drawing approximately 14 x 19 inches unexamined out of frame. 19081697681908. Wynken Blynken and Nod one night / Sailed off in a wooden shoe. Published as a colour plate within a selection by M. G. Edgar entitled A Treasury of Verse for Little Children and illustrating Eugene Field's classic bedtime poem "Wynken Blynken and Nod". The volume was first published in 1908 by G. G. Harrap and featured eight colour plates by Pogany. One contemporary review of Pogany's illustrations described them as "beautiful" The Sphere. Another noted "fantastic pretty drawings by Willy Pogany" Saturday Review. The original poem by the writer Eugene Field 1850-1895 frequently called the "poet of childhood" was published in 1889. It has been set to music on numerous occasions became the basis for a Walt Disney "Silly Symphony" cartoon in 1938 and inspired Mabel Landrum Torrey's 1919 fountain sculpture in Denver's Washington Park. Original drawing 217 x 160 mm on paper laid down on artist's board 270 x 215 mm ink and watercolour signed with artist's monogram lower right. Mounted framed and glazed glazed size 390 x 310 mm.
