The strikingly illustrated first Dore edition of Pierre Dupont's depiction of The Wandering Jew with twelve plates from Gustave Dore. A first edition thus being the first edition of this work with Dore's illustrations. Collated complete with twelve plates. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth. This work is a poem on the legend with the prologue and epilogue by Pierre Dupont. With the Compliant and Beranger's Ballad set to music with the pianoforte accompaniment written by Ernest Dore present at the start of this work. Translated into English with critical remarks by George W Thornbury with a bibliographical notice to this work by Paul Lacroix.Gustave Dore was a prolific printmaker artist and illustrator known primarily for his wood engravings. He had a very successful illustrated Bible which earned him a major exhibition in London which later lead to the foundation of the Dore Gallery in Bond Street. Dore depicts the legend of the Wandering Jew's immortal journey from the crucifixion of Christ to Judgement Day. The beautiful monochrome artwork is filled with Dore's usual dramatic style constructed with biblical epic conflict woven into each stroke displaying this terrible legend in all its glory. With sweeping powerful illustrations befitting the legend Gustave Dore's collected work is enchantingly presented in this extremely scarce volume. With the bookplate of Wilfred Francis Southall. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth. Externally worn with marking and damp staining to the cloth. Front board has detached with the loss and lifting to the backstrip. Cloth to rear board is cockled. Rear board is tender with cords visible. Lacking front free endpaper. Bookplate to front paste down. Internally binding is tender with the textblock split in a couple of places. Half title detached but present. Two bright volumes from Paul Lacroix's vastly comprehensive and beautifully illustrated Le Moyen Age et La Renaissance. Vie Militaire et Religieuse is a First Edition. Les Arts Au Moyen Age has 19 chromolithographs and over 400 illustrations. Vie Militaire et Religieuse has 14 chromolithographs and over 400 illustrations. There are 'Percival Pearse' booksellers labels on the front endpapers of both volumes. Paul Lacroix 1806 1884 was a French author and journalist. Lacroix was an extremely prolific and varied writer. Over twenty historical romances alone came from his pen and he also wrote a variety of serious historical works including a history of Napoleon III and the life and times of the Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. He is best known under his pseudonym of P.L. Jacob bibliophile or Bibliophile Jacob suggested by the constant interest he took in public libraries and books generally. Lacroix was the author of Le moyen âge et la renaissance a standard work on the manners customs and dress of those times the chief merit of which lies in the great number of illustrations it contains. He also wrote many monographs on phases of the history of culture including Manners Custom and Dress During the Middle Ages and During the Renaissance Period. His works on bibliography were also extremely numerous. In 1885 he was appointed librarian of the Arsenal Library Paris. in a half calf binding with gilt lettering. The front outer hinge of Vie Militaire is split and the front inner hinge has failed. There is a chance the front board could detach in the post even after careful packaging. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping and rubbing with slight discolouration to the boards. There are ink numbers on the spine of Vie Militaire.
