With 21 chromolithographic plates and 350 engravings. Paul Lacroix 1806 - 1884 French author and journalist was born in Paris the son of a novelist. He is best known under his pseudonym of P.L. Jacob bibliophile or Bibliophile Jacob suggested by the constant interest he took in public libraries and books generally. Lacroix was extremely prolific. Over twenty historical romances alone came from his pen and he also wrote a variety of serious historical works including a history of Napoleon III and the life and times of the Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. He was the joint author of a five-volume work Le Moyen Age et la Renaissance 1847 a standard work on the manners customs and dress of that era. This book previously belonged to J. H. M. Springall and contains his bookplate. in a morocco binding. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing and bumping to the corners. Published in Paris by Librairie de Firmin-Didot et Cie it features 16 chromolithographs and over 250 in-text engravings along with comprehensive commentary on painting sculpture music furniture design architecture engraving porcelain and jewelry from Louis XIV to the pre-Revolutionary period. The binding is red leather and decorative cloth with ornate gilt decoration gilt edges and patterned endpapers. The book is complete with minor rubbing and shelf wear consistent with its age. A visual and textual reference on 18th-century French design and aesthetics including artists such as Watteau Boucher Chardin and Coypel and designers like Cressent and Lazarre Duvaux. Handsome copy with decorative appeal. The interest of the work is manifest both in its erudition and its accessibility and readability historical anecdotes. We owe it to Paul Jacob who was a great bibliophile writer and scholar and curator of the Arsenal library. If the entire series has become a great classic in the field it is because it successfully combines the work of publisher printer binder historian illustrators and documentation and few books have ultimately achieved this amalgamation that we owe to Firmin-Didot at a time when books had become quite mediocre.
