Original publisher's ribbed black cloth panelled and ruled in blind spine title gilt quite bright boards are edgeworn and show card top and tail are frayed with small losses hinges slightly weak one signature starting a little front free endpaper has been excised with an old ugly adhesive remnant opposite on the pastedown. Handleable and otherwise sound. Later stereotype edition copyright is noted to be held by John Quincy Adams who also published this in 1836. Kneeland an intimate with Robert Dale Owen and Frances Wright was a frequent contributor to their Free Enquirer. In 1831 he moved to Boston and established The Boston Investigator one of the longest lived 1831-1904 freethought publications in the United States See Brown & Stein p. 33; he was tried four times and eventually convicted for his writings in the Dec. 20 1833 issue. Extremities are slightly abraded a 3-inch split upper front joint boards yawn somewhat. Within textblock is quite sound; find original blanks faintly toned with flecks of soil v.I foxing to portrait occasional foxing in text v.II frontis heavily foxed some splashy foxing in text. A prolific author of fiction and poetry Young was a striking example of an independent professional female writer of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Writing "for a maintenance" as she euphemistically puts it Young encapsulates the financial hardship and open hostility that greeted female authors of the time especially those who were fully reliant on their literary output. Taken from a letter to the Royal Literary Fund 28 March 1808 by Ms. Young "melange which was thrown together at the express desire of my Publisher and I hope Voltaire has not suffer'd by my choice of selection and omissions." Complete in four volumes. Portrait frontispiece. Page of advertisements at the rear. Very scattered foxing. Wear to the joints extremities and surface of the spines. In very good condition. A complete set covering the broad scope of the versatile and prolific writer. One of the most influential thinkers of the French Enlightenment Francois-Marie Arouet know by the nom de plum Voltaire was a resourceful and prolific writer. His works touched nearly every literary form including plays poems novels theoretical essays and scientific treatises. A forthright and candid advocate of civil liberties he frequently criticized the institutions of religious dogma and classism prevalent in 18th century France often doing so through satire to avoid censorship and imprisonment.
