Two volumes bound as one: frontis portrait tissue-guarded lii 408 2 frontis of family with tissue lii repeated material 416p. first edition recased in late 19thC red morocco gilt: a custom-bound production with pleasing spine titling raised bands ruled and tooled gold all edges fully gilded sewn headbands green endsheets overprinted gilt. Extremities are slightly abraded a 3-inch split upper front joint boards yawn somewhat. Within textblock is quite sound; find original blanks faintly toned with flecks of soil v.I foxing to portrait occasional foxing in text v.II frontis heavily foxed some splashy foxing in text. A very good copy pace the split which in no way affects handling. Kneeland an intimate with Robert Dale Owen and Frances Wright was a frequent contributor to their Free Enquirer. In 1831 he moved to Boston and established The Boston Investigator one of the longest lived 1831-1904 freethought publications in the United States See Brown & Stein p. 33; he was tried four times and eventually convicted for his writings in the Dec. 20 1833 issue. Handleable and otherwise sound. Later stereotype edition copyright is noted to be held by John Quincy Adams who also published this in 1836. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece an extra set of 'en-tetes' in colour and monochrome 'en-tetes' by Adrien Moreau. This volume holds the English translation of the French satire Candide ou l'Optimisme written by Voltaire a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment first published in 1759.The story follows a young man Candide who lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world.Translated with an introduction by Walter Jerrold. Detailed historical studies into the lives of Charles XII King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718 and Peter I better known as Peter the Great the Tsar of all Russia from 1682 and the first Emperor of all Russia from 1721 until his death in 1725. Written by François-Marie Arouet a French Enlightenment writer philosopher satirist and historian known by his nom de plume Voltaire. Famous for his wit criticism of Christianity and of slavery and as advocate of freedom of speech freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Translated by Tobias George Smollett a Scottish writer and surgeon. In the original tooled calf. Externally smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Lacking the spine label. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Further spotting and the odd small mark to the endpapers. He sought to craft a shorter dictionary of articles concerning the Enlightenment that would have a smaller format so people could carry revolutionary ideas in their pockets.<br /> <br /> Around 1870 Edward Trulove the radical publisher and printer of this edition took up publishing Voltaire's dictionary for the humanist cause. He was brought to trial due to his belief in freedom of speech and staunch atheism refusing to swear the Christian oath on the stand. Moreau le jeune 1741-1814. Single copies from the present edition were also sold separately by Renouard. "Cette collection de gravures est l'une des plus belles qui ait jamais été exécutée pour aucun livre" Fürstenberg. Arranged in 21 vols. by Renouard it contains of: Théatre 9 vols. 1809; Romans 2 vols. 1809 and 1808; Poèmes et discours en vers 1808; Epîtres stances et odes 1808; Contes en vers satires et poésies mèlées 1808; Siècle de Louis XIV 2 vols. 1808; Précis du siècle de Louis XV 1808; Histoire de l'empire de Russie sous Pierre le Grand 1809; La Henriade poème avec les notes et variantes suivi de l'essai sur la poésie épique 1816; La Pucelle d'Orléans poème en vingt et un chants 1816; Histoire de Charles XII roi de Suède 1816. The majority of the volumes are illustrated with 113 engravings by Moreau le Jeune. Renouard added a series of c. 65 portraits of famous peoples mostly engraved by Augustin Saint-Aubin the copper-plates of which Renouard possessed. Probably this is the best-known work of Moreau le Jeune draftsman und engraver. After the first announcement of the publication of the Kehl edition of Voltaire's complete works he started the series of illustrations without an order and on his own account. Later Moreau sold them to Beaumarchais who included them in the de-luxe edition of Voltaire's complete works printed at Kehl in 1785-89.
