Dedica iniziale di Monti a Giuseppe Napoleone re di Napoli e di Sicilia. La prima edizione del libretto ando' esaurita ancor prima della rappresentazione e se ne appronto' immediatamente una seconda - questa - a cura dell'Officina del Corriere in S. Domenico Soriano al largo dello Spirito Santo (ne da' infatti notizia Il Corriere di Napoli proprio il 19 marzo 1808). Nel melodramma, I Pitagorici sono perseguitati dal tiranno, Dionigi di Siracusa: nello sviluppo dell'azione, Monti vuole adombrare i martiri napoletani del 1799.
