The head and foot of the spine are bumped with some rubbing. There is a faded ink mark to the bottom of the front board. The final page has been miscut and a fragment of the previous page stands proud. Internal hinges are beginning to crack. Very good minus still attractive copy. 8vo.Pp xvi 394. The first English translation by George Martin Huss. No half title. Lavishly illustrated in text. Four leaves of advertisements to rear.An article from "Construction" in the 'Dictionnaire Raisonne de l'Architecture Francaise' containing a complete general survey of the history of architecture with chapter dealing with its development from Greek and Roman times to developments in the thirteenth century as well as civil and military construction. Eugene Viollet-le-Duc was a French architect and author known for his restoration of some of the most prominent medieval landmarks in France including the Notre-Dame de Paris the Basilica of Saint Denis Mont Saint-Michel Sainte-Chapelle the medieval walls of the city of Carcassonne and Roquetaillade castle in the Bordeaux region. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture Canterbury School of Architecture and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture". In the original publisher's full cloth binding new endpapers. Externally smart with light bumping to head and tail of spine. Malcolm Higgs ex libris stamp to front pastedown. Poor/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. vi LACKS pp. vii-xx 1 which includes part of the introduction the table of contents and the list of plates 517pp. This missing text can be viewed online at the Hathi trust website. Translation and with an introductory essay by Henry Van Brunt. Illustrated with plates and woodcuts. This volume contains all called for 18 fold-outs and 110 figures black and white line drawings. Concerning the fold-outs one admits to several short closed tears at blank extremities and a couple of others that admit to a mild wrinkling appearance also at blank extremities. Bound in original green cloth with gilt lettering and decorations to spine and gilt decoration to front cover. There is also a blind decoration to back cover. Volume admits to several small bumps to extremities which are also quite worn. Some general rubbing to remainder of cloth which is a little heavier on parts of joints and a few other places at exterior. Minor spotting and light soiling to exterior which generally maintains much of its original charm. A little heavier but not terribly offensive soiling to a small number of pages ~10 and to edges of pages. Some tanning to paper though this isn't offensive either. Binding is generally firm though starting a bit with some separation to front hinge where missing text was and with several minor tears to paper over back hinge. Text clean. Viollet-le-Duc était un architecte français qui a restauré de nombreux monuments médiévaux importants en France y compris ceux qui avaient été endommagés ou abandonnés pendant la Révolution française. Ses principaux projets de restauration comprenaient Notre-Dame de Paris la basilique Saint-Denis le Mont Saint-Michel la Sainte-Chapelle et les murs médiévaux de la ville de Carcassonne. Ses écrits ultérieurs ont eu une influence notable sur une nouvelle génération d'architectes dont Antoni Gaudí Louis Sullivan et Frank Lloyd Wright. . Viollet-le-Duc participe également à la défense de Paris pendant la guerre franco-prussienne 1870-1871. Il a été tellement influencé par le conflit que pendant ses dernières années il a décrit la défense idéalisée de la France par l'analogie de l'histoire militaire de Le Roche-Pont un château imaginaire dans Histoire d'une Forteresse Annales d'une forteresse deux fois traduit en anglais. Accessible et bien documenté il est en partie fictif. Annales d'une forteresse a fortement influencé la pensée défensive militaire française. La critique de Viollet-le-Duc de l'effet de l'artillerie appliquant ses connaissances pratiques de la guerre de 18701871 est si complète qu'elle décrit avec précision les principes appliqués à la défense de la France jusqu'à la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
