In uniform quarter morocco bindings over cloth covered boards four raised bands gilt tooling to spine. Externally lightly rubbed to head and tail of spine and extremities boards lightly marked. Faint previous ownership inscription to recto front blank leaf 'Premieres Meditations Poetiques' dated 1885. Internally firmly bound. Minor staining mark to top edge first few leaves 'Nouvelles Meditations' not affecting any of the text. Light spotting to leaves with gentle age toning as usual with the type of paper used. Foi educado no Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Tornou-se assistente-mestre no Lycée Charlemagne e posteriormente na École Normale. Em 1812 ganhou um prémio da Academia com um ensaio sobre Michel de Montaigne. Sob a restauração foi nomeado primeiramente professor adjunto de História moderna e em seguida professor de eloquência francesa na Sorbonne.</p>_x000d_<p>Em 1819 publicou um livro sobre Oliver Cromwell e dois anos depois foi eleito para a Academia Francesa. Villemain foi nomeado pelo governo da restauração <em>Chef de l"imprimerie et de la librairie</em> um posto que envolvia um tipo de censura irregular da imprensa e posteriormente para o cargo de mestre de petições.</p>_x000d_<p>Antes da Revolução de Julho foi destituído do seu cargo pelas suas tendências liberais e eleito deputado por Évreux. Membro do conselho da instrução pública foi duas vezes ministro do referido departamento e também se tornou secretário da Academia Francesa. Durante todo o período que durou a Monarquia de Julho ele foi um dos principais distribuidores do mecenato literário em França mas nos seus últimos anos a sua reputação diminuiu.
