412535Lipsiae - In Libraria C.F.R.G.S. de Kleefeld:. Hardcover. Fair. Theocritus was a Greek poet generally considered the founder of the bucolic poetry genre. His poems explore various themes including love nature mythology and the social and cultural life of his time. His work is important for its literary and cultural impact and for the insights it provides into the Hellenistic world. It is particularly notable for its vivid depictions of rural life love and mythology. "Theocriti Carmina" refers to a collection of poems attributed to Theocritus. The term literally translates to "poems of Theocritus". These poems primarily known for their pastoral and idyllic themes have been studied and collected for centuries. In this volume the poems appear in ancient Greek with annotations in Latin. Fair condition hardback. Paper covered boards with fragile attachment of front board to spine. Edges rubbed. Front fold of spine torn at top and bottom. Pages tanned with age spotting throughout. Text block is held together securely. Lipsiae - In Libraria C.F.R.G.S. de Kleefeld: hardcover

175739157Berlin: Gottlieb August Lange. 1757. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-. Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.; Small 8vo; 9 p.l. & 140 pages; Contemporary pattern printed paper-covered boards green paper label on spine titled in ms. OCLC: 504805539 First edition of this translation into German verse of Theocritus a third century B.C. poet usually thought of as the creator of ancient Greek bucolic poetry. There is a faint ink signature of a previous owner at the blank top margin of the title page. The paper is somewhat toned throughout with one brief ink mark in the text along with a few blots in the margins and the blank top corner of the last leaf is folded down without loss. The Idylls are grouped here as usual with works by Moschus and Bion. During his brief lifetime 1730-1761 the translator Christian Gottlieb Lieberkühn studied theology at the University of Halle preparing a dissertation under Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten. He served in the Prussian Army during the Silesian Wars and as a chaplin during the Seven Years War. Somehow he found the time to publish at least five original literary works and also earned a reputation as a translator. In addition to the present translation of Theokritos Moschus and Bion Lieberkühn also published a translation of the Pastorals of Publius Vergilius Maro and the French text of Georg Ludvig von Bar's 'Epitre diverses sur des subjets diverse.' . 17134638London: Printed for E. Curll 1713. ii iv 60 105 3 4 ads frontispiece. Bound without the portrait of Creech found in some copies. Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf red morocco label. Lightly toned some soiling. Extremities rubbed a few scrapes joints cracking at head of spine. The first edition of Creech’s translation of Theocritus by the famously unscrupulous publisher Edmund Curll following its 1684 Oxford first appearance. Curll’s edition was reissued in 1721 with a cancel title-page suggesting that it did not sell as well as Curll may have hoped. The BL copy has two engraved portraits one of Creech and one of Theocritus but the copies in Leeds and Oxford appear to have only one so it may have been issued thus. ESTC T138189. Printed for E.
