1647689Lovanium Louvain: Hieronymus Nempaeus 1647.

A classic of Renaissance medicine by Francisco Valles de Covarrubias known as Valles the Philosopher chief physician to King Philip II of Spain and professor at Alcalá. Methodus Medendi “The Method of Healing†is his major theoretical work outlining the guiding principles of diagnosis and treatment according to Galenic and Aristotelian doctrine. The text is divided into four books covering: I the regimen of the sick II cures according to simple indications III compound remedies and IV circumstances of curing and abstaining from cure. Drawing on both Hippocratic and scholastic sources Valles integrates natural philosophy with clinical observation marking the transition between medieval humoralism and the empirical methods of early modern medicine.

Printed in clear Roman type with decorative head- and tailpieces this Louvain edition continued the European dissemination of Valles’s work which remained a standard university text well into the 17th century. The treatise profoundly influenced later Spanish and Latin medical authors and helped establish a rational systematic framework for therapeutics in pre-Enlightenment Europe.

Condition & Binding: Contemporary full mottled calf gilt-ruled spine with five raised bands and gilt leaf tools; red morocco spine label lettered “Method. Medend.†Boards moderately rubbed and mottled with small areas of wear; short crack at foot of front joint but holding firm. Interior remarkably clean and crisp with only light occasional foxing and faint marginal toning. Overall- very good. Hieronymus Nempaeus unknown
