Le vicende e le persone descritte nel romanzo sono frutto di fantasia, per quanto gli eventi si ispirino a un delitto realmente accaduto, l'omicidio del giovane iscritto al Fronte della Gioventù Sergio Ramelli, sprangato a morte da militanti di Avanguardia Operaia: ma tale rifacimento è solo per contestualizzare e dare veridicità al romanzo ambientato ai giorni nostri. L'"escamotage" narrativo è dato dal ritrovamento di un vecchio libro: "Il fiore spezzato", che narra di un omicidio politico commesso negli anni Settanta. A ritrovarlo è una giovane donna, che per uno scherzo del destino è l'ignara moglie di un protagonista di quegli anni. L'autore nell'Introduzione: "Non scrivo questo per cercare assoluzioni o simpatie, ma soltanto per spiegare che le vicende di cui mi sono impossessato per dare vita ai miei personaggi, mai esistiti in questo mondo, e che ho in parte modificato secondo i capricci della mia fantasia, non sono usate allo scopo di sostenere tesi o partigianerie, ma solo per cercare di esplorare in un romanzo le infinite possibilità dell'agire umano.
