Per la buona riuscita dell'operazione, Soichiro Yagami fa lo scambio degli occhi, e scopre così il vero nome di Mello. Lo comunica a Light, senza tuttavia scriverlo sul quaderno, con la speranza di convincere Mello alla resa. Il padre di Light viene invece ferito mortalmente in una sparatoria e Mello fugge dopo aver fatto esplodere il suo covo.
