192639093Paris: Editions Enfantines Citroën 1926. First edition. Very good. First printing of this unusual and hilariously chaotic story of a young French boy's adventures in his Citroënette motorized toy car including joining the circus entering a race and fleeing from the police. André Citroën was no stranger to creative marketing for his car brand: between 1925 and 1934 he commissioned the Eiffel Tower as an advertising platform displaying the word CITROËN in 250000 light bulbs. In the 20s he aimed to sell cars by marketing to the children of potential customers; he remarked "I want a child's three first words to be: Papa Maman Citroën" Wolgensinger 55. The Citroënette an electric toy car large enough for children to drive was the lynchpin in this plan and FRISEMOUCHE FAIT DE L'AUTO served to inspire these young motorcar enthusiasts. <br /> To make the book particularly appealing Citroën enlisted cartoonist Jean Bruller who also happened to have an engineering degree. Bruller would go on to join the French Resistance under the Vichy regime adopting the pen name Vercors with which he wrote anti-Nazi short stories. FRISEMOUCHE FAIT DE L'AUTO is a delightful example of his pre-war work. 10.75'' x 8.25''. Original pictorial boards rebacked with original spine laid down. Illustrated in color. 64 pages. Contemporary price label to front pastedown 22F. Binding with mild bumping to corners; boards a touch bowed. Leaves with scattered foxing a hint of toning. Tight.
