197821012601San Francisco: The Press in Tuscany Alley 1978. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Wilson Joyce Lancaster. Review copy edition of 500 copies quarto size 114 pp. signed by Joyce Lancaster Wilson and Adrian Wilson. The Press in Tuscany Alley was one of San Francisco's small private press jewels. Adrian Wilson 1924-1988 was both a book designer and a scholar authoring "The Design of Books" which is regarded as a classic text on book design. As the New York Times stated in his obituary "Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books and became a mentor to younger men and women eager to learn the printer's craft. His many volumes while little-known to the general public are famous among print connoisseurs and many are collector's items." <br/><br/>When Adrian Wilson donated old proofs of "A Child's Garden of Verses" for a work not as of that date printed to the Silverado Museum devoted to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson the founder and curator urged him to publish a limited edition of the verses. They were the ones who suggested that he contact the Beinecke Library Yale University which had in their archives nine poems of Stevenson's that had "been eliminated from the first and all later editions"; the Beinecke provided copies of the verses and permission to print them and hence this book was born.<br/><br/>With colour illustrations by Adrian's wife Joyce Lancaster Wilson the Wilsons produced a heartbreakingly lovely book a perfect marriage of Stevenson's wonderful poems for children with Joyce Wilson's charming pictures designed by the master Adrian Wilson. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter green linen with a paper spine label decorative green paper covered boards printed at The Press green endpapers fore- and bottom edges uncut thirty-six decorative initials and ten illustrations in colour by Joyce Lancaster Wilson; types Centaur and Arrighi Arches Laid Text paper quarto size 10 1/8" x 6.5" pagination: 1-10 11-114 1 colophon limited edition this copy stated as a "Review Copy" on the colophon total edition size 500 copies only 300 of which were bound signed by Joyce Lancaster Wilson and Adrian Wilson on the colophon. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Fine the boards clean and unmarked straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; clean crisp as new. <br/><br/>___CITATION: "The Work and Play of Adrian Wilson" no. 182. <br/><br/>___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply please inquire for details. <br/><br/>___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. 224248Chicago Stone & Kimball. issues dated June 1 and 15 1895 June 15 1896 and November 15 1896. Containing Robert Louis Stevenson's Macaire with W.E. Henley acts I and II 6-15-95 and The Tramps 11-15-96. Each small folio 7 1/2" x 4 3/4" wrappers sewn. The November issue has decorated wrappers. Enclosed in a 3/4 green morocco slipcase with folding chemise. Original wrappers 4 issues near fine. Macaire is of interest because it follows hard upon the printing done by Stone & Kimball for the American copyright edition of which only about 12 printed. See #341 of the Beinecke Library catalog of which editor G.L. McKay states ".the earliest separate edition issued by a publisher." McKay references the chap book edition here by noting the dropped '9' from page number '49' of #341 and its subsequent replacement in this chap book edition by a '9' from an incorrect font. See page 49 of the June 1 1895 issue. The inference is near simultaneous printing. George Barr McCutcheon's copies with his bookplate in each issue. See description under #580 of American Art Association catalogue of the McCutcheon sale April 1925. See Kramer 45. F. Soft cover. Chicago, Stone & Kimball, paperback books

Kidnapped is a historical fiction novel that is presented as the semi-autobiographical adventure tales of David Balfour whose surname is Stevenson's mother's maiden name. 1888146041888. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1888. 8 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First Edition published about six weeks before the London edition. Unlike the English one the American edition is illustrated twelve plates; it was also issued at a higher price in red cloth no precedence. Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883 for serial appearance in "Young Folks" where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared. He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization which prompted Scribner's to publish it in book form which in turn prompted Stevenson's publisher Cassell in London. This is a remarkably near-fine copy which for these fragile wrappers is amazing spine paper slightly darkened but very little of the edge-wear and soil which typically afflict this yellow paper. In our experience the American edition is scarcer than the English one even on this side of the Atlantic -- especially in the yellow wrapper binding. Beinecke 480; Princeton 40 copy 3. 1895116211895. Illustrated. New York: The Merriam Company n.d. 1895. 3 pp undated ads. Original violet cloth decorated in dark violet. First Edition issued as the second volume in Merriam's "Violet Series." This is Stevenson's famous tale about the anatomist "K---" and his need for cadavres based undoubtedly upon the career of Robert Knox 1793-1862; the 1945 film of the same title starred Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. RLS actually wrote this tale in mid-1881 to be part of a collection of supernatural tales which he referred to as "creepers"; he never completed the project but a few of the tales remain. Ironically this grisly tale's first appearance was in the Pall Mall Gazette's 1884 Christmas Extra substituted at the last moment for a briefer RLS tale in order to fulfill a commitment of sufficient length. It is equally ironic that such a grisly story would first appear in book form in this cute little violet volume decorated with flowers. This is an attractive nearly fine copy unusually free of soil or wear the lettering on the spine is a little faded as always and there are small tape-stains on the endpapers; there is no bubbling of the cloth which is atypical for this book.
