1895116211895. Illustrated. New York: The Merriam Company n.d. 1895. 3 pp undated ads. Original violet cloth decorated in dark violet. First Edition issued as the second volume in Merriam's "Violet Series." This is Stevenson's famous tale about the anatomist "K---" and his need for cadavres based undoubtedly upon the career of Robert Knox 1793-1862; the 1945 film of the same title starred Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. RLS actually wrote this tale in mid-1881 to be part of a collection of supernatural tales which he referred to as "creepers"; he never completed the project but a few of the tales remain. Ironically this grisly tale's first appearance was in the Pall Mall Gazette's 1884 Christmas Extra substituted at the last moment for a briefer RLS tale in order to fulfill a commitment of sufficient length. It is equally ironic that such a grisly story would first appear in book form in this cute little violet volume decorated with flowers. This is an attractive nearly fine copy unusually free of soil or wear the lettering on the spine is a little faded as always and there are small tape-stains on the endpapers; there is no bubbling of the cloth which is atypical for this book. 224248Chicago Stone & Kimball. issues dated June 1 and 15 1895 June 15 1896 and November 15 1896. Containing Robert Louis Stevenson's Macaire with W.E. Henley acts I and II 6-15-95 and The Tramps 11-15-96. Each small folio 7 1/2" x 4 3/4" wrappers sewn. The November issue has decorated wrappers. Enclosed in a 3/4 green morocco slipcase with folding chemise. Original wrappers 4 issues near fine. Macaire is of interest because it follows hard upon the printing done by Stone & Kimball for the American copyright edition of which only about 12 printed. See #341 of the Beinecke Library catalog of which editor G.L. McKay states ".the earliest separate edition issued by a publisher." McKay references the chap book edition here by noting the dropped '9' from page number '49' of #341 and its subsequent replacement in this chap book edition by a '9' from an incorrect font. See page 49 of the June 1 1895 issue. The inference is near simultaneous printing. George Barr McCutcheon's copies with his bookplate in each issue. See description under #580 of American Art Association catalogue of the McCutcheon sale April 1925. See Kramer 45. F. Soft cover. Chicago, Stone & Kimball, paperback books

First English edition with the bookplate of collector Beverly Chew on the front pastedown. 237 pp publisher's ads bound in original gold cloth illustrated in black. Upper corners bumped offsetting to half-title and facing page otherwise quite a nice copy. Laid in in a brown paper envelope on which is typed "Robert Louis Stevenson Original Photograph" is a 5.25" x 3.75" three-quarter length portrait of Stevenson holding a cigarette. It is a known portrait by James Notman but this is probably a later copy as the National Portrait Gallery copy of this image is an albumen print while this appears to be a bromide or plantinum print.
