FIRST EDITION THE LIMITED EDITION SIGNED BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS. This is the first appearance of THE WINDING STAIR in separate form. It represents some of Yeats's most philosophical and mature work. The 1929 volume contains poems that bridge the period between THE TOWER and the larger 1933 collection. THE WINDING STAIR AND OTHER POEMS. The collection contains: In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markievicz; Death; A Dialogue of Self and Soul; Blood and the Moon; Oil and Blood; and A Woman Young and Old.<br> The title refers to the spiral staircase in Yeats's tower Thoor Ballylee a symbol that recurs throughout his later work. By 1929 Yeats was in his sixties. He had won the Nobel Prize experienced political turmoil in Ireland seen friends die and was increasingly aware of his own mortality. The winding stairs of the tower became a symbol of looking back over a lifetime while still moving forward. The ascent is spiritual but it remains rooted in lived experiences.
