New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). In English. 720 p., ills. Memoirs of an Ottoman prince. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib (known in Turkish as 'Ali Vâsib Efendi' - or, using his Turkish surname, as 'Ali Vâsib Osmanoglu') was born in the Çiragan Palace, on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, in 1903. His memoirs deal with the life and times of the Ottoman Imperial family during the last years of the Ottoman Sultanate, as well as with his life during his enforced exile in Hungary, France and Egypt. While in Istanbul he witnessed the First World War, the abolition of the Sultanate in 1923 and then that of the Caliphate in 1924, at which time he was exiled along with the rest of the Imperial family. He was finally allowed to return to his homeland in 1974, after half a century in exile. Ali Vâsib Efendi is the only Ottoman Imperial Prince to have written his memoirs, and they give a unique insight into the people and politics of his day. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib, the great-grandson of Sultan Murad V, was at various times in the presence of the last four Ottoman Sultans as well as the last Caliph. He personally knew the leading figures of the time - such as Enver Pasha. He was a witness to key events in Ottoman history during the last days of the Empire. He lived through the occupation of Istanbul by the Allies - the Ottoman court's most difficult period - and then the exile of the Ottoman Dynasty in 1924.

[Exhibition catalogue]. A very heavy volume. Istanbul Research Institute in collaboration with Robert College presented the exhibition The Anatomy of a Tradition: 150 Years of Robert College 1863 - 2013 at the Istanbul Research Institute on the occasion of 150th anniversary of Robert College, one of the long-established and meritocratic educational institutions of Istanbul. Robert College was founded in Istanbul in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher R. Robert, two men who believed in the universal value of education. It was the first American school to be established in the Ottoman lands, and outside the USA. Surviving revolutions, wars, earthquakes, fires, and epidemics, the College never closed down a single day throughout its 150-year history. Robert College has educated seven prime ministers (four of them Bulgarian), countless statesmen, writers, artists, musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, engineers, doctors, lawyers, and educators. It has been the standard against which other schools measure themselves, even when Robert College itself had the challenge of living up to its own standards, due to lack of funding, inadequate buildings etc. from time to time throughout its history. Curated by Cem Akas, the exhibition shed light on the 150 years of the College, as well as the educational, cultural, social and intellectual life in Istanbul through selected photographs and objects from Robert College Archives, Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library and private collections.

New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 376 p. From the middle of the nineteenth century, Ottoman scholars played a crucial role in educating society and shaping Muslim identity at the tip of Southern Africa. Scholars such as Abu Bakr Effendi, Mahmud Fakih Emin Effendi and Ottoman Consul-Generals Ohannes Majakyan Effendi, Mehmet Remzi Bey strengthened the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and South Africa, as far as Mauritius Island. The Noor'ul Osmaniya Mosque, Ottoman Cricket Club, Noor'ul Hamidiyya Mosque in Cape Town and many Ottoman graves in South Africa are evidence of the Ottoman presence and traces in the region. Ottoman emissaries and Muslim theologians left a siginficant cultural legacy in Southern Africa. This cultural and Islamic legacy has yet to be woven into South African historiography. This study seeks to contribute the field in the light of archival sources from the Ottoman State Archives and National Archives of South Africa.

He went to primary school and then attended the secondary school Fatih Rustiyesi in the same city. His family moved to Izmir in 1879. He completed his secondary education in Izmir attending the school which now is known as Izmir Atatürk Lisesi. He later attended a Christian school to learn French where he completed his first translation works. Usakligil founded the newspaper Hizmet in 1886. After 1896 his works were published in the Turkish literary journal Servet-i Fünun, known for its adoption of European literary styles. When his novel Kirik Hayatlar (Broken Lives) was censored by the Ottoman Regime in 1901, he stopped publishing novels. Broken Lives could only be published in 1923 after the establishment of modern Turkey. Usakligil's early style is based closely on French Romanticism and most of his novels deal with unfulfilled love. His work is distinguished from contemporary Turkish literature by its more concrete form and creates its own artistic language through the use of Persian and Arabic loanwords. In his later years the writer moved to the village of San Stefano near Istanbul. In 1926, when a new law imposed to give a Turkish name to each community, he suggested to give to the village its present name of Yesilköy (literally: "Green Village"). Memoirs of Usakligil.
