Green cloth over flexible boards "Photographs" stamped in gilt on upper board; 4to; approx. pp. 50 with over 100 mounted postcard-format entries usually two per page on both the recto and the verso. Wonderful! Easily one of the nicest albums of this kind that we have had the pleasure of cataloguing. This unique album contains more than 100 dated "diary entries" out of chronological sequence each one a hand-made postcard featuring original artwork including watercolors pencil sketches ink drawings both naive and accomplished a photograph a cyanotype or an image cut from an unknown source such as a newspaper or magazine. The postcards are created by numerous contributors and their rich variety is difficult to capture except to say that they run the gamut of human capability the sketch artist offers an anthropomorphic chicken the watercolor painter a peaceful landscape and personality sentimental humorous sweet thoughtful. An original August 15 1931 edition of "Tours and Detours"- a tourism-related newspaper issued by the Socony Oil Company to its customers. This issue contains articles about touring the Northeast region of the United States with photographs and articles on Clinton NY; Buffalo & Niagara Falls NY; and Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. The rear cover contains a road map of main highways in New England. Following the break-up of Standard Oil in 1911 the Standard Oil Company of New York SOCONY was formed along with 33 other break-off companies. In 1920 the company registered the name "Mobiloil" as its trademark and in 1963 it became the Mobil Oil Company. Very Good usual folds with a few tears. Scarce 10.00. <br/><br/> unknown books

1868329Chicago: Root and Cady Publishers 1868. Single issue. 335 x 260 mm. 13 x 10 inches. 8 pp. folded and unopened some light soiling to the paper otherwise very good. Rare musical newspaper published by Ebenezer Toner Root and Chauncy Marvin Cady the leading music publisher's in Chicago before the fire in 1871. The Song Messenger was printed from 1864 to 1871 when the company went bankrupt after the losses caused by the fire. In addition to advertisements for musical instruments lessons and scores this issue contains an "Introductory Course for Congregational Singing" which include instructions for learning Psalm LXVII "Let the People Praise Thee O God Let all the People Praise Thee." Also included is the song Gathering Home music by C. T. Lockwood and lyrics by H. M. Look. Lockwood was prolific song writer producing scores of melodies and marches for Chicago publishers during the 1860 and early 1870's. This issue of The Song Messenger was printed in August 1868 and according to OCLC in known in one copy at the Newberry Library which also holds the April issue of the same year. Knox College in Illinois and the Library of Virginia also hold one issue from the year 1869. Lockwood's Gathering Home was also printed in Western Musical World: A Journal of Music Art and Literature in 1868 by S. Brainard also of Chicago. No. 3 of 25 copies for sale folio size 52 pp. The story begins: "I was present during the Great Plague of 1665 It took away my life" he said. Per the artist this work originally produced by her in 1967 is "about a man who is killed by the plague in London in 1665; I have brought him to life again so that he can tell his story." The story unfolds as a series of nine eerily wonderful etchings by Angela Lemaire which were inspired by the sufferings of the plague victims. Each enclosed in a separate leaf and introduced with a quotation from scripture also dealing with suffering with each plate numbered and signed by her. Ms. Lemaire's Afterword tells the story of her inspiration for the work and the essay by Anthony Dyson discusses the making and proofing of the plates which is a story worthy on its own merits. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Unbound folio sheets each with letterpress printing on the first and last pages inserted between the plates the images from zinc plates with each plate signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. The eight intaglio plates images 2 through 9 are each tissue-guarded; Image 1 and the original Title page are both woodcuts. Philadelphia 1862.<br/><br/> On the front page in the first one and half columns on the left and concluding in two full columns on the last page is an article on the February 5 1862 United States Senate vote to expel Senator Jesse Bright of Indiana who was the most senior Democrat in the Senate. On March 1 1861 Senator Bright wrote a letter of introduction for Thomas B. Lincoln a Texas arms dealer. The letter was addressed to Jefferson Davis. In July 1861 Lincoln was captured with the letter by Union troops as he attempted to enter the Confederacy. Senator Bright was accused of being a traitor because of the letter. The proceedings of the Senate and impressions of the vote by Senators are included in the article. Senator Bright was expelled by a vote of 32 to 14. The yeas and nays votes with each Senator listed are on the front page. Jesse Bright was the fourth Senator from a Union state to be expelled during the Civil War.<br/><br/> unknown books
