1815213387Mainz: Florian Kupferberg 1815. Half Leather. Good Minus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Large. A very scarce copy of this 2 volume set. Bound in half leather with brown marbled boards. Text in German. An 1815 reprint the first edition being 1785. The leather spines have splitting with loss of 3 cm at the head and 3.5 cm at the tail of volume I. Loss of 4 cm to the head and 1.5 cm to the tail of the spine of volume II. The remaining leather spine has further splits to it. The board edges are rubbed and there is light rubbing to the front and rear boards. Ink stamps with faint lettering to the front end papers and title page and neat ink numbers to the front paste downs though no other evidence of these possibly being ex-library cancellations. An area of soiling to the rear paste down. Volume I - 495pp. Loss of pp 232 235 and 237 241 and 243 with creasing and short tears to the front fore edge of 233 which is loose. Splitting between pp 240 - 245 though the book remains firmly held tight with the cords. Several pages have creasing to the top corners and there is light foxing to the first few pages of the book. The pages are otherwise clean and tight. Volume II - 472pp. A wax mark to the front paste down. The pages appear a little wrinkled with several page corners being turned resulting in a neat crease. There is light foxing to the first few pages of the book. Some splitting between pp 226 - 227 at the tail of the spine though the book remains tightly bound by the cords. Tiny neat ink name signature to the tail of the last page. The pages remain clean and tight. A very scarce copy - more than acceptable despite the page loss - being an early edition of Schillers work. Florian Kupferberg hardcover

FIRST EDITION AND A VERY EARLY WORK BY ONE THE GREATEST SOCIAL COMMENTATORS OF HIS TIME. Carlyle's thinking was heavily influenced by German idealism and he established himself as an expert on German literature. He was well suited to craft this fine biography of the famous German poet philosopher physician historian and playwright. As both an historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle was a pivotal thinker in nineteenth century Britain. The beautifully illustrated first illustrated edition of Schiller's 'Fridolin or the Road to the Iron Forge' - a ballad which the German poet Schiller 1759-1805 composed for a poetry competition against Goethe in 1797 with the text volume of the parallel German-English edition published in London by Bohte ‘foreign bookseller to his majesty’. The engravings by Moritz Retzsch 1779-1857 German painter and draughtsman were much praised: accompanied by the illustrations the ballad 'assumes a new and more exalted character' provided by Retzsch's ability to give them 'an airy dimness that softens what is beautiful and deepens all that is terrific' Monthly Review 1825 p.522.
