18910002197PHILADELPHIA VALLEY FORGE VIRGINIA. Good. 1891. On offer is a fascinating original historic 1891 manuscript relic of one man's sojourn 25 years after the fact to many of the Civil War's battle sites. Handwritten by Schiller B. Hermann as identified on the front cover plus his business card tucked in from Portland Oregon he was the son of Oregon politician Binger Hermann 1843-1926. From April through May he writes in a 3" x 4.5" book 40 or so pages of notes first visiting Philadelphia and Valley Forge. The other entries for the most part center on the Civil War battlefields in Virginia. He describes the sites 25 years on with some riveting imagery. The back of the notebook contains names of the caretakers books etc. Here are some snippets: "Washington's teeth seen in a Dentist window worn by him at Valley Forge 1775 . They are a solid piece of bone with the teeth cut in." there is a small drawing. Appomattox - Clover growing the field ground very dry Court House built in 1840 old Orchard where two armies met and the "Apple tree" - "Quick disappearance of the tree after the surrender even the roots." He sees "two darkies driving the hogs and playing their Banjoes & Singing." Petersburg - "I took a Hack and drove out to the Battle-ground. Sandy country.Peanuts & tobacco abound.25 cts admission is charge by Mr. Griffiths a very well posted gentleman. Hermann talks of battle between Beauregard Lee and Grant. "Grant's line and his breast works extended for 23 miles and they can all be plainly seen.Grant's men tunnelled under them from the west under the brow of the hill all of which still remain though sunken in some places." "We next drove to the National Cemetery where like the remains of 6500 dead about 500 know. The people of Richmond never visit these National Cemeteries and on Decoration Day the Negroes decorate the National and the whites Hollywood Cemetery." Writes of Pocohontas sites: Train to Seven Pines Fair Oaks - went across battlefield with Jim Lynes after buying relics from him. "Confeds are buried on every side in some places they are so thick that their bones protrude above the ground. The ground where corn was growing 37 years ago is now covered thickly with pine timber 60 feet high. The cannon ruts still remain showing how soft the ground was when battle fought." Gaines's Mill Chickahominy Cold Harbor - "Many soldiers lie here this being a fierce battle. Confeds. used Union Dead for pillows. We now drove to Cold Harbor about 3 miles distant.and conversed with Mrs. Savage the Superintendent.Country much cultivated - corn rows." Mentions Grant Lee. Mr. Savage was in war. Overall G.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF SCHILLER B. 19100012200Union Missouri: Teen Journal Academic Notebook Missouri Student Junior High. Fair with no dust jacket. 1910. Softcover. On offer is a delightful notebook which is at once a journal and academic notebook of a young teenager in Union Missouri in the early 20th century. This book belonged to Florence Flora Schiller 1897-1993 who was born in Union Missouri to Ida Mantles and Charles Schiller. At the time this notebook was written she was a 13 year old middle school student. Schiller lived her entire life in or near Union. She worked in shoemaking until becoming a housewife when she married Frank Herbst 1886-1969 a cabinet maker. They were married in 1932 later in life for both and there is no evidence that they had children. Flora kept this notebook between November 1910 and late April 1911. It is clearly intended to be a notebook recording Floras academic subjects but she blends her academic notes with personal making this journal an insightful look into the life experience of a 13-year-old girl. The book opens with Floras handwritten summaries of her schools Literary Society meetings which includes the names of dozens of her classmates transitions into notes for a history exam to the lyrics of the school song and similarly oscillates back and forth between personal affairs and academic throughout the book. At the end she writes the script for a school play she participated in in the 7th grade. Academic subjects noted include literature mathematics geography history and civics. Throughout the notebook her personality is evident and behind the lessons a reader can glimpse a lively good-humoured child: Examinations/The other night I went to bed/But not to sleep for my poor head/Was filled with a most awful dread/Examinations! /I thought of this and then of that/Of set and sit which goes with sat /I fear my brain has run to fat p12. Many lessons followed a classic rote methodology with focused fact-based questions followed by answers. History lessons were focused very much on American history: What two naval battles were similar in importance The two naval battles that were similar in importance were Paul Jones sea fight and Constitution captures Guerriere p21. Many of the history lesson point to a wider cultural approach to the American experience and philosophy: Peter Zenger editor of New York newspaper dared to find fault with Gov Cosby he was put in prison. When the day for the trial came on hand the judges were surprised to see Hamilton in the courtroom. He declared in a speech that it was not the poor editors fault nor of New York alone. It is the cause of Liberty. Zenger was set free p 81. For a cultural historian this notebook is a fine glimpse into the world of early 20th century mid-west America. Through what is taught to children an observer can discern what the larger community believes is important and values. For an educator this is an excellent example of teaching that took place a century earlier. A genealogist would find the names of classmates a welcome source of information. This small notebook measures 8.5 inches by 6.75 inches and contains 106 pages. It is 100 % complete. The cover is in fairly good condition with some chipping and staining. The binding is sewn and the stitching is extremely loose but all pages are intact. The spine was bound with tape which has worn through in places especially the upper and lower corners. The handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 106 pages; Signed by Author . Teen Journal Academic Notebook Missouri Student Junior High paperback

19360001305Cleveland OHIO OH. Very Good. 1936. On offer is an original manuscript diary and fascinating piece of Americana being a diary written by a woman who seems to be the most self centered young woman that one can imagine. Of the 2/3 or so filled diary has entries dripping with self absorption brimming with self entitlement with a backdrop of physical pain and illness this woman may or may not being feeling. A snippet that says much: 'one of Bill's patients died last night at 12:30 so my sleep was broken ' later in a very serious tone: 'Mother just discovered Tommy our canary bird dead. We didn't even know he was sick.' This woman is a psychology thesis in human form. While unidentified we believe she is married to a Doctor William Bill Schiller though it could be Schillier. Our author is a late 20s maybe early 30s woman recently married but her family may have pushed her into it somehow. A newish doctor still wanting to go back to school for surgical training he works day and night. He is most likely staying out on purpose and by August they are in the process of divorcing. She writes: 'Spent all afternoon trying to chase up my will o'wisp husband who had a call to make. It annoys me trying to find him all the time.' Parallel to his excessive work is her procrastination and failure as an author of children's books and magazine articles. She notes one rejection notice after another. The diary is littered with complaints: he is cheap he is inattentive he is a mamma's boy he is unfeeling and on. Physically she complains about back pain toothache heart palpitations always tired having the 'jumps' all over. She complains that people think she just has a case of 'nerves'. She complains of pains in her legs. She takes shots for pain and in the writing one can see how she gets groggy and the writing gets sloppier. It seems that she takes the shots frequently. She is jealous of the relationship between her husband and his mother and his aunt and is sarcastic about them several times. He works long hours and she complains that she is left alone far too much and suggests that he is having relationships with other women. She thinks he is cold and distant from her. At one point she writes: 'I suppose I ought to get 'continental attitude' toward marriage. Along with the complaints are some tidbits of the times: news of the Simpson affair in England she admires the King's passion that he would throw it all away for his woman playing the new game Monopoly going to Kaase's Restaurant charity work . The holidays make for interesting reading as she dwells on her loss of her husband and is bitter. At no time in the diary does she ever take any responsibilty for what is happening to her it is always someone else's fault. Many names and relatives names are written about inside and local collector or historians may well establish the exact specifics of these people.
