Dougal from a Daguerreotype by Whipple." Interesting nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf: "Presented to E.G. Ryan Esqr / for his little son / by Jas. L. Woodside / Washington May 1854." Edward George Ryan 1810-80 was a well-known lawyer judge and politician of Madison Wisconsin while Woodside was an obscure government official who served as clerk of the House Committee of Claims. He graduated from Harvard University in 1826 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1829. In 1834 he became pastor of Union Congregational Church Essex Street Church in Boston. He would remain in that position until his death in 1878.
