Stated first edition in the <b>RARE ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER.</b> Offsetting from old moisture damage evidenced by a white residue mark running the width of the rear cover approximately one inch from the top edge. The damage mirrors a stain on the wrapper's rear panel and spine. The stain while noticeable is less detracting than one might expect not affecting the spine of the book itself that is otherwise fine and bright. There is other minor soiling and wear to the dust wrapper but it is unfaded and complete lettered in navy blue against a pale turquoise ground. '"Price $4.00" is printed on the inner flap along with a list of Harper publications on psychology and psychoanalysis. The back flap and rear panel also serve as advertisements for current Harper publications. The front cover of the dust wrapper however is fully dedicated to the promotion of Houdini ".He dissects with an especially keen scalpel he does not wield it as one determined to destroy but rather a seeker after truth. Although he has the utmost respect for the honest belief of any person he is the relentless enemy of deliberate fraud and the account of his adventures in the investigation and detection of it forms a valuable chapter in the crusade for the truth." First Edition.<br /><br />Charmian Kittredge London November 27 1871-January 14 1955 was Jack London's second wife. After divorcing Bess Maddern London in 1904 London married Charmian Kittredge the following year. Biographer Russ Kingman called Charmian "Jack's soul-mate always at his side and a perfect match." She was the author of several books about her life with Jack London: The Log of the Snark Our Hawaii and The Book of Jack London. The last is considered by scholars to be an important but flawed source of biographical information on London: Clarice Stasz calls it "an uneven account that omits Jack's illegitimacy yet has surprisingly frank information nonetheless concerning his personality." Their relationship became the subject of a book Clarice Stasz' American Dreamers. The couple had no children who survived them. One died soon after being born and another pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Shortly after the death of Jack London Charmian had an affair with Harry Houdini. A PBS source cites an Houdini biographer saying: Most of the evidence of their affair convincingly reconstructed by Houdini biographer Kenneth Silverman comes from brief entries in Charmian's diaries. They saw each other over several weeks early in 1918 while Charmian was living in New York where Houdini was starring in the patriotic World War I extravaganza "Cheer Up." Charmian wrote that after they saw each other a few times Houdini made a "declaration" that "rather shakes me up." They became intimate a short time later. She wrote that one visit by Houdini had "stirred me to the deep" and that he apparently felt the same declaring "I'm mad about you" and "I give all of myself to you." Throughout she refers to him alternately as "Magic" her "Magic Man" or "Magic Lover." As intense as it apparently was their attachment did not last long. Charmian the "New Woman" whose marriage to London had included open sexual experimentation never stopped seeing other men.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Inscription to front end paper. Most issues to very good to near fine with only the second issue good plus wrappers bit age toned and discolored with wrinkling throughout. Fine grouping of 11 issues accompanied by a printed letter from president Donald S. Carmichael that accompanies the first issue and introduces it and also a few subscription renewal notices. Seven issues are still in their original mailing envelopes. Also present are two Typed Notes Signed and four Autograph Notes Signed from Valentine each on buff heavy stock 5½" X 3½" penny postal cards the first two TNsS chronologically from Decatur IL and dated 26 June and 7 July 1947 the second two ANsS from Glendale CA and dated 26 June 1948 and 7 January 1949 the last two ANsS being picture postcards from New York NY and London England and dated 16 July 1949 and 7 June 1950. All addressed to Elmer R. Underwood. Very good. Friendly FDR chitchat about the Association membership "We have had 38 new members ! since The FDR Collector came out" new FDR books etc. The New York picture postcard features a portrait of FDR and the London picture postcard depicts the President Roosevelt Memorial in London's Grosvenor Square. Valentine was for a time Ralph G. Newman's business partner at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop that Newman founded and later sold books and even published a Stephen Crane bibliography after relocating to Glendale California. Underwood 1896-1982 was a noted Chicago Civil War collector and one of the handful of devotees along with Abraham Lincoln Book Shop founder Ralph G. Newman who founded the Chicago Civil War Round Table in 1942 -- the first of what would eventually become hundreds of similar Civil War Round Tables around the country. How long this publication continued publishing is surprisingly unclear -- references may be found to the presence of 1955 issues in institutional collections but nothing later than that -- suggesting that the May 1955 issue here may well be the final issue. A fine and scarce grouping in any case with accompanying autograph material from its one and only editor. Issues of this journal are rather uncommon and lengths of any run are rarely seen. This fine gathering is also accompanied by seven issues of Valentine's FDR for sale lists numbers 3 through 9 each titled "Books Pamphlets Autographs and Allied Material Relating to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and His Times" each 4to and several pages in length generally very good. ALSO present are two identically-titled lists ! from Valentine's one-time business partner Ralph G. Newman of the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop probably preceding Valentine's lists.
