19080009072NATCHEZ MISSISSIPPI MI OSCEOLA ARKANSAS AK. Good. 1908. On offer is a super original diary and manuscript relic of a Mississippi man named Volney Fowler consisting of entries for the years 1908 1909 and 1916. Fowler seems to be an Surveyor working with a small company in Natchez Mississippi offering researchers and historians an interesting perspective of life in the Deep South. Throughout the diary and throughout all years of writing Fowler writes of receiving calls from many different people in town to survey various plots of land as well as reports from his boss Forest and a coworker and brother Orrick For example: April 6 1909. While at breakfast at Osceola a phone message came from Foresh for me to return home immediately to survey ____ place for Farrar. So when cars came at Lake Bruen I returned home.I did not wish to leave Osceola on Tuesday and would not have come away if Farrar had not got Mr. Ratcliffe to phone me to come to survey. In between reports of his work in Natchez Fowler writes of day-to-day occurrences and activities such as watching movies he is especially moved by Birth of a Nation by D.W. Griffith vacationing in Osceola Arkansas. As well Fowler is very interested in astrology and the diary is filled with many instances of astrological movements in the sky: Jupiter enters Leo. Mars enters Leo.; Venus enters Gemini; Venus conj. with moon in Cancer. In addition the verso and recto of the cover are filled with Fowlers writing on the stars and astrological movements in the year 1908. Precession of equinoxes has caused vernal equinox to leave Aries and become Pisces.; Mars enters Leo 13 Sept.; Mercury in Taurus Aug. 20th in Cancer.; At the end of 1909 Fowler writes of the long sickness and death of wife: Dr. Chamberlain is treating my wife for Angina Pectoris - which is inflammation of the chest.wife rested Tolerably last night. We think she is a trifle better at Sunrise.Dr. Beekman called 8 1/2 clock A.M. About 9 1/2 clock AM it began to appear that end was a matter of short time. Mrs. Baker came and was helpful and so Mr.s. Stamply. About 12 1/2 Clock Winnie began to show that she knew she was losing her best friend - Ida and children arrived after dark.Mamma his wife died at Eleven clock this night. My wifes funeral took place this evening at 4 clock. Our boys brought a lot yesterday in city cemetery. His entries for the year 1909 end after the death of his wife. The book is about 390 pages of which there is writing in 370 or so. The cover is in fair shape. The front cover is almost wholly detached. The spine and front cover show discoloration tears and signs of wear and age. The pages and writing are still in good shape. Fowlers handwriting is easy to read even when slightly faded or written in pencil. There are only a few entries in 1916 at the very beginning of the diary. They stop after the middle of the month in January. The entries for 1909 end after the death of Fowlers wife while the entries for 1908 continue throughout the year. This diary is a very interesting look into the life of a deep south surveyor living through the ups and downs of life. Excerpts of text: January 21 1908. 19370001799TRIESTE ITALY. Good. 1937. On offer is a fascinating group of five 5 original manuscript relics of World War II and Italian home front life. Handwritten by Vittoria Bussoni a 17 year old in 1937 girl who does a super job detailing her life just prior to the onset of the War in Europe through 1945. The specific dates are 1937 1938 1941 1944 and 1945. Vittoria does a super job throughout the years of keeping up her diary though in 1945 she peters out in August with the final brief message on Nov 1st of that year. Even with the backdrop of impending war Vittoria lives a life of fun and frivolity between school and work we believe in a fabric store going dancing with Wilma and going to her house going to the Corso with Carmen and Sofia going to see "Wake Up and Live" Il fantasma cantante starring Alice Faye meeting boys going out with boys and even notes the King and Queen of Italy in Trieste on one occasion and much much more. Understandably the narrative turns less playful and frivolous in the later diaries as the War becomes a harsh reality and she confides her fears in the diary. Here are some translated snippets: Sunday 6 Cloudy day. At 11:30 at Primitati was accepted to do the course at Torino in Corso at Caffe' Specchi with Ita Pino Stelsio then Albine Rino Giovanni were at the bar at 4 met up and went to Dreher. Not really in the mood to dance everyone is tired from the night before. from the night before they stole a bottle of champagne and came home late. Monday April 7 Rainy day the evening went in Corso with Ita. Then Stelvio introduced us an officer of the San Marco division at 9 met up and went to the Dreher beer house then home by foot nice evening with moon. The officer walked Ita home. Tuesday 8 Cold cloudy day the evening home with Ester inc. Stelvio walked . the strong order tomorrow at 8:30 with Ita and the officer to the Principe a cinema "A desperate cause" Jerry Hugo cute outside Stelvio walked me home said goodnight to each other. Friday 27 April Cloudy Rainy. Political events- almost everything and Italy "settentrionale" nord Liguria Piemonte e Lombardia; Occupied by the patriots. The Americans already crossed the Po. Taken Piacenza Parma. The evening in Corso there's something in the air. They wanted to cut off the equipment lights of the port. Hope it will be resolved here like in the other cities. Saturday April 28 Rainy cloudy. In Germany the Russian armate joined or met up/bumped into the Americans at the town of Fiume. The Partisans battle the Russians. The German forces in Trieste like in the other cities of north Italy surrender to the American troops. At 17.30 closed the store and went home. Sunday April 29 Nice day. Spent whole day at home alone went for walk to Stefano's house then wanted to go to the movies but there were too many people at home at good hour early. At 10 in the evening the artillery began shooting all night. Monday April 30 Nice day wanted to go to work but it was impossible battles in the streets Eddy came ran away from the Germans this night. Today came up the Comitato Nazionale di Liberazione made many Germans prisoners. The S.S. although does not surrender any of the battles. 29 June Sunday Cloudy around 5 met with Stelvio went to "Stella di Rio" magnificent work at 7:30 went outside walked me home underneath the Portici gallery Franco saw me I am saddened. NOTES page: We are without electric current and without water made some reserves hope we won't have to go through anything worse than this. I came to know that the English army will continue advancements without interruption surpassed Padova Mestre the Piave and there is talk that they already are today at 12 and Monfalcone troops Neo-Zelandesi I dread the troops of colour. What will be of us I'm very scared. BIO NOTES: Vittoria Bussoni Via del Molino a Vapore 61 Trieste b. April 26 1920. 19230007012ASEA ABOARD THE S.S. MONGOLIA EUROPE. Good. 1923. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript travel journal of a young woman's ocean cruise from New York to Europe and a month-long tour of the continent. What makes this journal particularly interesting for the reader should they be researchers or historians of America's post World War I ascendancy is the specific regard the author has for America's social construct in the era of the Roaring 20s. The author is Virginia L. Montgomery writes very well though with a certain air of haughtiness or arrogance to her writing as examples below will illustrate. In some respects it is an unabashed cry of American exceptionalism exemplifying the term 'Ugly American'. In the 19th century Mark Twain wrote about The Innocents Abroad and perhaps it is no coincidence that Montgomery refers to herself and her 2 travelling companions as "the Innocents' " p. 8 Montgomery travels with her sister Maude and a girlfriend Vergue Criswell. They are referred to in the journal as M and V but are identified from the passenger manifest included within. From the very limited information available about Criswell we may suppose that they are in their mid-to-late 20's and living in the Providence RI area. In her opening 'Introduction' she maintains that they will have a right to "crow over our less fortunate neighbours". In the 2nd paragraph she states "There is more Tradition behind the rising curtain of civilization in America than in any other country in the world. . Was there not more Tradition in the valiant little band of Pilgrims . than in the mighty efforts of Alexander.' She ends the Introduction with this exclamation: Tradition backed by the principles of right and justice has made America the greatest country in the world. No wonder it will be hard to judge Europe by American eyes and morals. And so the perspective of this journal is cast. She describes in detail their journey across the Atlantic on board S.S. Mongolia. Their descriptions are colourful and include a significant amount of commentary not flattering about crew and other passengers. Our especial cabin steward a little sawed off wizened she-man named Pierre or Harry was most solicitous. p. 6 The Captain appeared today and I wasn't particularly impressed. So did the ship's doctor a broken down rummy effect and the purser a sissy looking fellow as full of conceit as the ocean is swells. Germans and English! Ye Gods What a mixture! Thank God I was born in America! With the American complex p. 13 Although her language gets rather florid in many places her descriptions of countryside in Europe are quite colourful: The fields were a riot of color. Poppies added their crimson splashes to the gold of ripened wheat . p.26 Descriptions of museums palaces cathedrals and other points of interest are well described and can leave the reader with a sense of what conditions were like there 5 years after the WWI. This is especially so when she describes the lingering destruction from that conflict. From mid-July through mid-Aug their travels took them through France Switzerland Germany Belgium The Netherlands and finally England. The exact itinerary is included in the handwritten notes. A historian would find this an excellent first-hand account of sights and scenes in the immediate postwar years. It also gives an insight into one particular aspect of the American character especially vis-avis new or unusual people incidents or experiences. There is a typed transcription secured in a 2-ring binder. The handwritten notes are 8" by 5 inches and secured by a lace. They number 142 handwritten pages. The typed notes are secured in a hard cover 2-ring binder and amount to 85 pages. The journal is in good condition although the spine is cracked. Most pages are completely attached. The pages are 100% complete.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF VIRGINIA MONTGOMERY; MAUDE MONTGOMERY; VERGUE CRISSWELL; S.S.
