195113516Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company 1951. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth dust jacket. 368pp. Frontispiece illustrations pictorial endpapers. Very good/very good. Early but not first printing and an extraordinary association copy: Inner flyleaf bears the large pencilled ownership signature of Adlai Stevenson's sister Elizabeth Ives and another inner flyleaf bears a fine presentation inscription by the author in blue ink: "To Mrs. Ernest Ives / As an historic item of / special interest to you in / this campaign year 1952. / With best wishes / Bess Furman / Washington D.C. / Sept. 22 '52." On pages 256-258 Ives' grandfather appears -- Adlai E. Stevenson I U.S. vice president under Cleveland -- and alongside the text Ives has made a few pencil rules. Elizabeth "Buffie" Stevenson Ives 1898-1994 was the sole sibling of the governor and was involved in his first presidential bid at the time. Quite an unusual copy. The Bobbs-Merrill Company hardcover

1965000824Tralee: Anvil Books 1965. Very Good condition. Bright clean tight square and unmarked. Flat spine. No owner's name or bookplate. Not a remainder. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Autobiography of an IRA man. Chronicles the social and military aspects of the war of independence in Ireland. Details his role and that of his brother Pat. Micheal O'Suilleabhain defends his unit's activities: "We burned no house occupied by a civilian loyalist or otherwise" but admits: "in other areas it is true that the IRA reacted to this army activity by burning loyalist homes." Bound in the original pictorial wraps. From the rear cover: "Through mountain passes and along the beds of creeks Micheal O'Suilleabhain takes us to attack an armed police patrol here or to plan a large-scale engagement there against the elite of Britain's specially recruited fighting forces in Ireland - the famous Auxiliaries - all ex-commissioned officers and to a man much decorated veterans of world war one. The rank smell of cordite and the smoke and dust of battle on rock-bordered roads are in this book. But in it too is heard the beating of the hearts of the mountainy men. Through it rings the gay laughter of its comely young women and the warm affection of parents sons and daughters in the mountain homes of Muskerry. It was inevitable that Micheal O'Suilleabhain and his people should rally to the armed struggle for freedom with an all-embracing dedication. They comprehended perhaps better than most areas in the country the fundamental causes that led to 1916 and to the War of Independence. And from the ranks of their fighting men has come a chronicler of competence and talent to tell their story as few others could have told it. Here is the place the time the man and the writer - a rare and fortunate combination indeed.". First Edition Paperback Original - PBO. Mass Market Paperback.
