Anglo-Irish Gaelic scholar and critic Percival Arland Ussher 1899-1980 was renowned for his wit combined with critical insight "Thirty years ago to praise James Joyce was an act of daring; today it needs an almost equal daring to criticise him.". Ussher believed that none of these great writers could be understood without reference to their Irish background. Later he was a champion of J.P. Donleavy and wrote the Introduction to the American edition of "The Ginger Man." This is a Fine copy of the Second Printing of the First Edition. Blue cloth binding with gilt title on the spine. 160 pages clean and bright. The fragile dustwrapper in complete and unclipped with a darkened spine even tanning and a small waterstain on the rear panel; in an archival plastic protector.
