An advance first edition copy the author's own copy with her corrections throughout the text. Most of the corrections have been signaled by a sticky tab. With pencil corrections to the text and notes to the verso of the rear endpaper and rear paste down and notes in pencil and ink to the recto of the front endpaper. The author has written in ink to the recto of the rear endpaper "This shouldn't happen again".Letter from an editor at Alfred A. Knopf Sonny Mehta is loosely inserted discussing the subtitle of the work. Three typed reviews for the work are taped to the verso of the front endpaper from Nick Fraser Francis Wheen and Tzvetan Todorov.In the original unclipped dust wrapper.An insightful and haunting biography on Louis Darquier de Pellepoix who was was Commissioner-General for Jewish Affairs under the Vichy Régime. In this work he is described as "one of history's most despicable villains and con men" working as a Naxi collaborator to "control" the Jewish population during World War Two.Illustrated with thirty-two plates alongside maps and family trees. Collated complete.By Carmen Callil an Australian publisher who founded Virago Press in 1973 to "publish books which celebrated women and women's lives and which would by so doing spread the message of women's liberation to the whole population". Virago publish works by new and neglected female authors publishing the works by authors such as Daphne du Maurier Sylvia Townsend Warner Margaret Atwood and Angela Carter all with a distinctive green spine synonymous with Virago. In the original publisher's paper covered boards in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine.
