First edition in French of Polidori's Vampires. This work often mistakenly attributed to Charles Nodier author of the preliminary observations signed with his initials is by Cyprien Berard then director of the Theater de Vaudeville. He points out the popularity that the vampire had conquered at the end of the 18th century: "the frightening fable of the vampires could not fail to be consecrated among all the nations which received it in their belief. I have no doubt that the public grants like me another kind of rarer and more estimable merit to this novel.". France therefore lacked a literary production on vampires! Berard's work comes at the right time.It is by far the most interesting text that the first generation of French Romantics wrote." With the original chemise. A very handsome book in excellent condition. In the 1920s many women were drawn to the medium of bookbinding perhaps influenced by the new modernist designs forged by Pierre Legrain. The women included the widows of bookbinders killed in the war and a hwole new enterprising generation of young women who were searching for a fashionable vocation in teh arts. As the Ecole Estienne was reserved ofr men may women enrolled at the city’s Ecole et Les Ateliers d’Art Decoratif which had been founded in 1894. It is very probable that Lucette Lévy was among them. Binding instruction was offered first by Mme Rene Sergent and later by Lapersonne Choffe and Genevieve de Leotard. On completion of the 4 year course graduates sought employment in the city’s main binding workshops or set out to establish themselves independently. <br>Although we cannot find any details about her apart from occasional bindings which have appeared in the rooms viz. Christie’s 2009 and a couple of bindings in booksellers’ catalogues Lucette Lévy was clearly extremely talented with great technical ability like Adler she inclined to familiarising herself with the text and illustrations in a book to create an accord with it in her binding. She was varied and adaptive in her styles and was inventive with fonts for lettering and ways of binding throughout the 1920s and 1930s. G. Charpentier unknown

Piazza Paris Décembre 1898 23 x 35 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original lithograph executed by Patrice Dillon for L'Estampe Moderne series number 20 published in December 1898. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the reverse; engraving preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name title and an extract from a work. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Polichinelle by Charles Nodier reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential printing of very grand luxury: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of beautiful format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a complete work in itself. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal medium for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art in the same way as the illustrated luxury book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy. Pourtant.
