As he attempted to break away from Sherlock Holmes Conan Doyle wrote this science fiction/adventure novel set in the Amazon Basin which introduced the character Professor Challenger who would reappear in other of his non-Holmes titles. Considered one of his best novels it was made into a silent film in 1925. In 309 pages with frontispiece 15 half-tone illustrations by Harry Rountree unattributed throughout text all present secure & unblemished. First serialized in various magazines & published in book format in London by Hodder & Stoughton in 1912 this is the First American Edition from that same year unknown printing. Small 8vo 5.25" x 8.00" has olive cloth-covered boards lettered in bright gilt to front & spine lettering quite faded to the latter. Condition is VG: quite clean pages creamy white with modest tanning heavier around edges but completely unmarked. Binding strong & straight front hinge starting. Moderate rubbing to extremities heaviest with slight loss at both ends of spine & all corners. Scattered spotting to front board. NO DJ.
