FIRST APPEARANCE OF 'THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES'. The twelve immortal tales comprise: A Scandal in Bohemia; The Red-Headed League; A Case of Identity; The Boscombe Valley Mystery; The Five Orange Pips; The Man with the Twisted Lip; The Blue Carbuncle; The Speckled Band; The Engineer's Thumb; The Noble Bachelor; The Beryl Coronet; The Copper Beeches. 8vo., First Edition thus, with illustrations by Sidney Paget in the text; original publisher's binding of pictorial blue cloth, upper boards and backstrips blocked and lettered in gilt and black, red sprinkled edges, primrose endpapers, neatly recased, backstrip faded else a good, clean copy. First appearance of Doyle's boxing tale, present here in the original three instalments with a total of sixteen illustrations (2 full-page) by Paget. The story was never published individually in book form in the UK, but was included in The Green Flag (1900), and published individually in the US and Canada in 1907 (Green & Gibson A31). SCARCE. FIRST APPEARANCE OF 'THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES'. The twelve immortal tales comprise: Silver Blaze; The Cardboard Box; The Yellow Face; The Stockbroker's Clerk; The Gloria Scott; The Musgrave Ritual; The Reigate Squires; The Crooked Man; The Resident Patient; The Greek Interpreter; The Naval Treaty; The Final Problem. The Memoirs were collected in book form in December 1893, excepting 'The Cardboard Box' which was not so published until 'His Last Bow' in 1917. Several of Paget's iconic illustrations were omitted from the book version, and those for 'The Cardboard Box' were never reprinted. SCARCE. Green & Gibson, p.73-75.

2 vols., 8vo., First Edition thus, with numerous illustrations by Sidney Paget in the text; original publisher's binding of pictorial blue cloth, upper boards and backstrips blocked and lettered in gilt and black, red sprinkled edges, primrose endpapers, neatly recased, backstrips mildly faded (but all gilt wholly legible), a good, clean set. First appearance of Doyle's desert drama, present here in the original eight instalments with a total of forty-six illustrations by Paget (the book version, published later in the same year, contains only forty). 'The author visited Egypt at the end of 1895 and in January of the following year went with his family on a Cook's tour up the Nile to Wady Halfa. The threat from the Dervishes was then very real, a serious menance to civilisation and was the cause of some anxiety. Two months later the long-expected war broke out, and he chose to accompany the special force as a correspondent for the Westminster Gazette. He was at Korosko on 10 April and during the weeks that followed became well versed in the landscape and political realities of the country' (Green & Gibson). The first volume also contains Doyle's illustrated account 'Life on a Greenland Whaler'. SCARCE. Green & Gibson, p.106.

Roy. 8vo., First Edition thus, with numerous photographs and illustrations throughout, endpapers lightly browned, some light spotting as usual; original pictorial blue cloth blocked and lettered in black, gilt back, bevelled boards, red sprinkled edges, lower hinge cracked (but binding entirely sound), a very good, bright, clean copy. Contains the first appearance of Doyle's 'Round the Fire' stories II-VII. No. II is 'The Story of the Man with the Watches' (illustrated by Frank Craig); No. III is 'The Story of the Lost Special' (illustrated by Max Cowper). These two stories are widely recognised by Holmesians as the two most important 'lost' Holmes adventures. Both stories feature an unnamed amateur reasoner clearly intended by Doyle to be identified by his readers as Holmes himself. These two tales and their fellows were collected and published as 'Round the Fire Stories' in 1908. UNCOMMON IN THIS CONDITION. See Green & Gibson, p.409.
