FIRST APPEARANCE OF 'THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES'. The twelve immortal tales comprise: Silver Blaze; The Cardboard Box; The Yellow Face; The Stockbroker's Clerk; The Gloria Scott; The Musgrave Ritual; The Reigate Squires; The Crooked Man; The Resident Patient; The Greek Interpreter; The Naval Treaty; The Final Problem. The Memoirs were collected in book form in December 1893, excepting 'The Cardboard Box' which was not so published until 'His Last Bow' in 1917. Original dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and Strand Library design on upper covers and gilt label on spine. A very good or better copy without inscriptions small blindstamp to the top of the endpaper accompanied by a name gutters are uncracked and very good indeed some rubbing to the corners and extremities. A much nicer copy than is usually encountered. A collection of detective stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. It includes famous cases such as "The Musgrave Ritual" "The Greek Interpreter" and "The Final Problem" where Holmes confronts Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls. The collection deepens Holmes's character reveals his brother Mycroft and mixes clever deductions with gothic atmosphere danger and Victorian mystery making it one of the most memorable Holmes volumes. As he attempted to break away from Sherlock Holmes Conan Doyle wrote this science fiction/adventure novel set in the Amazon Basin which introduced the character Professor Challenger who would reappear in other of his non-Holmes titles. Considered one of his best novels it was made into a silent film in 1925. In 309 pages with frontispiece 15 half-tone illustrations by Harry Rountree unattributed throughout text all present secure & unblemished. First serialized in various magazines & published in book format in London by Hodder & Stoughton in 1912 this is the First American Edition from that same year unknown printing. Small 8vo 5.25" x 8.00" has olive cloth-covered boards lettered in bright gilt to front & spine lettering quite faded to the latter. Condition is VG: quite clean pages creamy white with modest tanning heavier around edges but completely unmarked. Binding strong & straight front hinge starting. Moderate rubbing to extremities heaviest with slight loss at both ends of spine & all corners. Scattered spotting to front board. NO DJ. The chapter was later reprinted in its entirety in the 'Incunabular Sherlock Holmes' 1958 resulting in several letters to the editor of The Sherlock Holmes Journal that noting its similarity to an Andrew Lang piece of 1904 ranged from accusations of "literary osmosis" to outright plagiarism.
