The Invention of the modern otoscope - nighteen years before Tröltsch GM 3374! Erste Ausgabe des Ohrenspiegels - 10 Jahre vor der Erfindung des Augen-Spiegels durch Helmholtz! Die Hals-Nasen-Ohrenheilkunde konnte sich erst so spät zu einem eigenen Fach entwickeln da die zu beobachtenden und zu behandelnden Organe in tiefen dunklen Körperhöhlen liegen; die dem bloßen menschlichen Auge nicht sichtbar sind. So bedurfte es erst der Erfindung eines perforierten Hohlspiegels durch Friedrich Hoffmann 1841 mit dessen Hilfe die Beleuchtung dieser Organe möglich wurde. Friedrich Hofmann 1806-1886 Arzt Geheimer Sanitätsrat in Burgsteinfurt beschreibt seinen perforierten Hohlspiegel der die Beleuchtungstechnik vor allem im HNO- und Augen-Bereich revolutioniert aber auch bei der Urethroskopie verwendet wird HAKEN GRÜNFELD. Die Erfindung war einfach er kratzte den spiegelnden Belag im Zentrum eines runden Toilettenspiegels ab und benutzte dieses Loch als Durchblick Die Bedeutung dieser Entdeckung wurde zuerst nicht erkannt und 1859 beschrieb v. Tröltsch den sogenannten Ohrenspiegel erneut. Seit dieser Zeit erfuhr er eine weite Verbreitung. -cf. Half cloth portfolio with paper coverd boards containing 72 plates in collotype and lithographic tone printing. Rubbing to boards and extremities of portfolio. Some wear to spine ends with some splitting along front joint which has been repaired internally. Some soil to boards. 10.5 x 8 cm triangular piece broken off from bottom inside card flap with some chipping along bottom of flap on verso. Some flaking to paper pasted on inside of cloth of portfolio. Eight page foreword and directory is printed on a single sheet folded twice. Sheet has split along vertical fold but is still holding along horizontal fold. Some age toning to plates and occasional smudge marks and light soil. 5 cm closed tear to plate 7 with light crease across plate. Some corner creases to a few other plates. Overall still a nice complete set of rare botanical plates from Heinrich Gross who was a professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart.
