004228Paris. Faux Lacquer. Very Good Minus. Handsome folder promoting opium as a pharmaceutical! N.d. circa 1900 to 1910. 30 by 23 cm. Tabularly-presented text is on the endpapers with four leaves of heavy blank yellow paper bound in by string. On the two page table of particular interest in our view is the drug called "Pantopon 'Roche'" whose composition is "Opium Total". Other drugs we note contain "barbiturate." The opium-connection might explain the Chinoiserie decoration of the binder. Of course the boards are also very decorative making this binder a prized promotional giveaway which we assume it would have been to the company's customers and other contacts. The Basel-based Hoffmann La Roche was founded in 1896 and soon had offices in Paris. It remains to this day a pharmaceutical giant. Minor surface loss to the black faux lacquer surface along the edges. Ink and pencil marks abounding on the yellow blanks suggesting these were used as blotter paper. Minor loss and looseness to the endpaper at the spine.

unknown books
