Includes the extra leaf for the 100th edition of Wie der Struwwelpeter reprinted from Gartenlaube 1871 No. 46 with a portrait of Hoffmann. Original decorated wood engraved boards listing all the individual episodes on the front cover and publisher’s advertisements on the back cover. The 100th edition was published as a jubilee edition and all subsequent editions contain the additional leaf at the beginning. This is the famous group of stories of children who are not good do not listen to their parents and therefore suffer the results often drastic consequences of their cruel mischief. One story tells of a child who tortures animals receiving a deep bite another receives burns when playing with matches another is carried off in the wind while playing with an umbrella never to return. There are children who cut off a thumb from playing with scissors and another who refuses to eat his soup and starves to death.<br /> <br /> Each of these stories has been related to psychiatric conditions. Each story has its symbols for a variety of mental problems such as ADHD or hyperactivity syndrome. The boy who refuses to eat has been described as suffering from anorexia nervosa. <br /> <br /> Hoffmann was a Frankfurt doctor and psychiatrist. Es sind die Proteinverbindungen und einiges damit verknüpfte." Hoffmann Heinrich Karl Hermann Hoffmann 1819-1891 Botaniker 1837 wurde er in Gießen Student der Medicin. Außer Botanik trieb er neben seinem Berufsstudium mit Eifer Ornithologie wobei ihn ein schönes Zeichentalent unterstützte. 1839 ging H. auf ein Jahr nach Berlin um den berühmten Physiologen Johannes Müller und unter Link s. A. D. B. XVIII 714 Botanik zu hören. Von hier aus unternahm er seine erste größere Reise die ihn nach Dänemark Schweden und Rußland führte. Nach bestandener Staatsprüfung wurde H. im April 1841 zum Dr. med. promovirt. Er bereiste darauf Großbritannien und Irland und ließ sich nachdem er ein halbes Jahr lang behufs Besuches der Krankenhäuser und botanischen Institute in Paris gewesen war 1842 in Gießen als practischer Arzt nieder. Indessen gab er den ärztlichen Beruf bald auf um sich noch in demselben Jahre als Privatdocent der Medicin zu habilitiren. In dieser Eigenschaft las er über Physiologie arbeitete auch auf Liebig's Anregung in physiologischer und pathologischer Chemie aus welchen Gebieten mehrere Schriften von ihm herrühren. Bald wandte sich Hoffmann ausschließlich der Botanik zu. 1843 hielt er seine erste Vorlesung über Pflanzenphysiologie die von nun an sein Hauptcolleg blieb; auch schriftstellerisch ging er ganz zur Botanik über.
