Uncanny tales First edition in English rare in commerce of this selection of 12 tales from the author of "the high point of the German Romantic Movement" Bleiler. The stories include "The Cooper of Nuremberg" which may have been a source for Wagner's Die Meistersinger and the horror story "Coppelius the Sandman" which was referenced heavily by Freud in his 1919 essay "The Uncanny". Hoffmann 1776-1822 was also known for his musical works including the opera Undine 1816 and for the 1816 story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" which is the basis for the ballet The Nutcracker. He is often credited as E. T. A. Hoffmann with the A standing for Amadeus in honour of Mozart. Octavo. Original brown cloth spine lettered in gilt covers stamped in blind edges untrimmed blind stamp of W. Ulman Boston. Ownership inscription of "Blackmore Bristol Tennessee 1888"; book label of poet and printer John Ruyle 1934-2008. The MÜNCHENER BILDERBOGEN were "important documents in the development of comic strips and cartooning" Hansen and over their 50 year run influenced Europe's visual culture with their humor and caricature. Contributors to the series included Lothar Meggendorfer Wilhelm Busch and Adolf Oberlander. This issue number 50 features broadsides 1177-1200 including a delightful glimpse of the year 1900 featuring futuristic trains motorcars and a sky full of balloons by Arpad Schmidhamer who would go on to illustrate the iconic "Totentanz der Politik" comic. 13.25'' x 8.75''.
