Octavo size 32 pp. A classic German children's tale originally published in 1845 with corresponding politically-incorrect racial allusions comprised of ten illustrated and rhymed stories mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way N.B. from Wiki. Mark Twain lived in Berlin Germany with his family in 1891; funds were tight and so as a Christmas present to his three children Twain translated this classic tale. The original illustrations were adapted by Fritz Kredel the result being this charming although somewhat scary as with many of the old folk tales children's book.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Cream colored pictoral paper boards with vignette of main character on the front publisher's device on title page three-page introduction by Mark Twain's daughter Clara Clemens full colour illustrations on every page; octavo size approximately 9" tall unpaginated with 16 leaves hand-set Lutetia type by the Golden Hind Press New Jersey printed and bound by the Haddon Craftsmen for the publisher. Dust jacket mirrors the binding the front flap shows the original $1.50 price summary of the book on both flaps publisher's ad for other Mark Twain children's books on the back panel.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is near fine the binding is clean the text block is strong and square it has solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; only condition issue we see is slight wear to head and tail of spine. Illustrated throughout in black/white and color with illustrations after the originals by Hoffmann. Some 37 rhymes in all including: Slovenly Peter; The Story of Cruel Frederick; The Story of the Inky Boys; The Story of Fidgety Philip; The Story of Flying Robert; Tom The Thief; Envious Minny; etc. Purchased with a collection of books from a single owner who had acquired them as a child in the early 1940's I am reasonably certain that this book dates from that period. In a maroon DJ with white lettering and a front cover border of white illustrations. Rear cover has a panel full of information about the book: 'This edition is a faithful copy of the original. Even the pleasing tones of the old hand-colored illustrations have been carefully reproduced so that these 'cheerful stories and funny pictures' can be enjoyed by children today as much as they were by their grandparents'. Book has only the slightest of wear; bit of darkening along the pastedown spine edges from aging of the glue used. DJ is a bit rubbed and edgeworn; small chips at top and bottom of spine. Hoffmann 1776-1822 was a German author composer draftsman caricaturist jurist and music critic. He was one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. Signor Formica was first published in 1820 and a year later was included in the forth volume of Hoffmann's work "Serapionsbrüder." His few literary works are stories in which supernatural and sinister characters appear in people's lives revealing grotesque and often tragic sides in human nature. This deluxe edition is illustrated with original artwork by the Hungarian sculptor and etcher Richard Hadl. The illustrations consist of one original signed full-page pencil drawing as well as 12 full-page- and 7 in-text drawings in aquatinta-manier. Additional signature of illustrator on limitation page.
