Bound in cloth with gilt lettering. 'The Youth of Parnassus' 1895 a compilation of short stories in imitation of Maupassant was Smith's first book. The stories include 'The Claim of the Past' 'A Broken Journey' 'The Sub-Warden' and 'The Optimist'. Logan Pearsall Smith was an American-born essayist and critic and a notable writer on historical semantics. Smith was an authority on 17th century divines. He was known for his aphorism and epigrams and his Trivia has been highly rated. He was a literary perfectionist and could take days refining his sentences. With 'Words and Idioms' he became a recognised authority on the correct use of English. He was in part the basis for the character of Nick Greene/Sir Nicholas Greene in Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando'. In a cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Slight wear and bumping to extremities. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound.
