His first novel "Digby Grand" was an instant success when it was published in 1852. Whyte-Melville went on to publish another twenty-one novels before his death after a hunting accident in 1878. Whyte-Melville was passionate about hunting and often wrote about the sport. "Songs and Verses" was one of his poetry anthologies besides "Legend of the True Cross" however he was mostly known for his sporting works. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Light fading to the spines. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the recto to the front free endpapers. Front hinges of 'Kate Coventry' and 'The Gladiators' are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown of one volume 'George J. Clark'. Internally firmly bound though 'The Queen's Maries' with a few leaves working loose. 'Digby Grand' binding is broken in places with leaves working loose and some loose leaves. Pages are bright and clean with a few spots to a couple of volumes to the first and last few pages.
