A curious and very scarce private printing of Shelley's 'Declaration of Rights' supported with letters by Francis Freeling and Chichester Parkinson-Fortescue. Accompanying this copy of Shelley's manifesto are letters obtained through the sale of Sir Francis Freeling's effects communicated by Mr. Fortescue and intended to give illustrate the fear and vigilance of the government of the day. In the original blue wraps. Several leaves uncut. Undated dated from a copy held at the British Library. Declaration of Rights first printed in 1812 serves as Percy Bysshe Shelley's 31-point radical pamphlet advocating for political reform and promoting liberty and free expression. His 15-year-old Irish servant was arrested for distributing copies of the work after which Shelley and his companions fled and settled in Tremadog Wales. In the original blue wraps. Externally with spotting and marks to the wraps. Slight edge wear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with spotting to the endpapers. Good Not Stated paperback

Pencilled gift inscription to FEP of Vol. I: 'Maud Brooke from Father. Feb 25th/84.' Small annotations in Vol. II to contents page and further notes to REP likely in the hand of Stopford Brooke. A gifted copy of Shelley's 1792-1822 poetical works edited by William Rossetti 1829-1919. Both Rossetti and Stopford Brooke stood as Chairman of the Shelley Society within their lifetimes and in gifting these volumes to his daughter Brooke would inspire within her a similar interest. Boards and spine show some wear along the edges and corners spine lightly sunned with a small dampstain at the foot front hinge cracked but remains largely sound with just the bottom being a bit loose and light offsetting to the title pages overall still very good with the text clean and the gilt on the spine remaining bright. Printed on laid paper. Bertram Dobell 1842-1914 bookseller and literary scholar. Dobell a largely self-taught bibliophile and scholar whose first job was as a baker's errand boy became the proprietor of two bookshops on Charing Cross Road ' held in high esteem by the leading bibliophiles of his day' ODNB. Dobell was an accomplished and prolific critic and editor chiefly remembered for correctly identifying the rediscovered manuscripts of Poetical Works and Centuries of Meditation as the work of Thomas Traherne. The 'Dr. Tebb' of Dobell's dedicatory inscription in this volume is almost certainly Dr. Albert Edward Tebb c.1864-1943 a medical doctor who attended many leading literary and artistic figures in late 19th- and early 20th-century London including Joseph Conrad and Ford Maddox Ford. Tebb was 'a knowledgeable collector of avant-garde prints and first editions a serious violinist of apparently modest skill and an early advocate and practitioner of socialized medicine' Bock Martin. '"What Has Happened To Poor Tebb": A Biographical Sketch of Conrad's Physician.' The Conradian vol. 23 no. 1 1998 p. 2. Tebb like Dobell an established if peripheral figure on the London literary scene would most likely have frequented Dobell's bookshops and is a believable purchaser of this lovingly produced facsimile edition of Shelley's first major poem a 'enigmatic and haunting study of longing desire and what in the 'Preface' Shelley calls 'self-centred seclusion'' ODNB. ~Robust packaging. There were also apparently three copies printed on vellum as noted in one OCLC record. Fine copy. Small 4to original printed tan paper boards untrimmed. An essay on Shelley's faith which concludes "Just as Religion is above all creeds dogmas and theologies whatsoever so was Shelley's Faith above those articles and doctrines which many accept in place of Religion. Shelley's Faith was in the Eternal Goodness in the Eternal Truth and in Eternal Love." W. Kineton Parkes 1865-1938 was a novelist art historian and librarian who had some involvement with the Pre-Raphaelites and compiled an interesting anthology entitled Painter Poets. His Shelley's Faith was probably first read as a paper possibly before the Shelley Society though that is not so stated. This publication has the earmarks of the involvement of T. J. Wise but the stated limitation may not be as fallacious as in some of Wise's publications; it is indeed scarce. Bookplate on the front paste-down of Louis V. Ledoux.
