No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed; no trace of it beyond Rodd's own statement has ever been discovered; and no mention of any kind either of its printing or distribution is to be found in the correspondence of Shelley or any of his friends. The Wandering Jew is a poem based on the mythical eternal whose legend spread to Europe in the 13th century. Marbled endpapers gilt dentelles. A trifle marked. Internally clean and crisp. The first edition of the collected papers of Shelley including a memoir compiled by English poet and writer Thomas Medwin 1788-1869 Shelley's cousin and biographer and a friend of Lord Byron. Like his more famous literary cousin Medwin matriculated at University College Oxford but failed to complete his degree eventually forcing him to undertake military service to support himself financially. The contents of this volume were previously published in The Atheneum throughout 1832 with Medwin's Memoir of Shelley being published first in six weekly instalments and the Shelley Papers following at 18 weekly intervals until April 1833. The papers hold several poems short stories and essays from the great poet including reflections on Frankenstein Mr Godwin and 'government by juries'. Medwin would go on to write a full Life of Shelley 1847 a strongly opinionated work which included personal attacks on his own enemies and which was subsequently lambasted in The Atheneum itself. One plate and several tissue guards loose. Varying tanning and creasing to plates and tissue guards. Some slightly creased corners. Boards have some edge wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners while spine ends are moderately crushed and rubbed. Small split to head of spine. Slightly scratched rubbed and marked overall. Minor droplet marks and uneven sunning more so to spine which is also a tad bubbled. Book has a moderate forward lean. Gilt is fairly bright on the front but dulled on the spine. From the library of Sir Percy Florence Shelley 1819-1889 the only surviving child of Percy and Mary Shelley. Sir Percy who inherited the family baronetcy in 1844 on the death of his grandfather also inherited his father's papers on the death of Mary Shelley; he and his wife Jane Lady Shelley created at Boscombe Manor something of a shrine to the poet's memory and had much to do with shaping the Victorian cult and myth of Shelley. Margaret Shelley 1801-1887 who owned this copy prior to her nephew was one of the poet's four younger sisters. The book combines two novels by Griffin issued together for this second edition the year after their first appearance.
