Publisher's original dark blue cloth with silver titles to the spine. Top edge stained red. A VG copy the binding clean and square with only light rubbing and softening at the spine tips. The contents are clean throughout. The text block edge is as usual a little tanned due to the poor quality of post-war paper used. Complete with the near fine lightly rubbed and nicked D/W which is exceptionally clean and bright with a couple of short closed tears at the bottom edge and a single small piece of tape applied by a former owner to the underside at the rear flap fold. With just a hint fading to the spine which is really bright and quite scarce thus. The D/W is not price-clipped 9s 6d net to the front flap. Includes a partial publisher's Book Society Choice wrap-around band missing the front panel and front free end-paper portions. The basis for the 1953 movie of the same name directed by George More O'Ferrall starring Trevor Howard Elizabeth Allen Maria Schell and Peter Finch. This is the Heinemann First Edition from 1948. A near fine or better copy without inscriptions. Laid in is the rare advertising material for 'A Gun For Sale' and review for 'The Heart of the Matter'. The 9s 6d D/W is in VG condition with a touch of wear to the extremities a couple of edge tears with associated creases but with the spine un-faded and with bright white lettering. With the RARE GREEN WRAP-AROUND BAND which has had a small repair to the front. RARE WITH THE BAND and scarce with these attributes. Heinemann hardcover

A Weekly Magazine of short stories poems articles critical reviews of books theatre cinema etc. A bound volume of 26 issues all ever published of the short-lived literary magazine edited by Graham Greene and with contributions by inter alia Evelyn Waugh Anthony Powell et al and illustrated by Edward Ardizzone Felix Topolski and others. Thick 4to. Attractive modern blue cloth with red leather label to the spine lettered in gilt. Miss Elizabeth Bowen Theatre Reviewer; Evelyn Waugh Book Reviewer; and Graham Greene Film Critic. All original covers bound in. The magazine ceased publication owing to the famous libel action brought by MGM on behalf of Shirley Temple whom Greene was alleged to have insulted in his review of the film adaptation of Kipling's "Wee Willie Winkie" a 1937 Shirley Temple film in which the not-yet-10-year-old Temple helps her father a British colonel in India. The magazine was sued for libel and the movie studio won the lawsuit with the judge writing "This libel is simply a gross outrage." VG and rare. This is a very heavy book which will attract additional postage particularly if ordered from overseas. Scarce. Photographs/scans available upon request. hardcover

Great photographic-style D/W. The Third Man was written in 8 weeks as the screen treatment that the author created as a first step in the production of the film version which appeared in 1949 and won first prize at the Cannes Film Festival and also won a BAFTA for Best British Film of 1950. Robert Krasker won an Oscar in 1951 for Best Cinematography Black & White. The Third Man was directed by Carol Reed and starred Joseph Cotten Alida Valli Orson Welles and Trevor Howard. The Third Man is Graham Greene's most iconic tale set in post-war Vienna 'a smashed dreary city' occupied by the four allied powers.
