1812R1879<p>First edition. Leather bound in Very Good condition. I suspect that this is an early review copy because this book has no illustrations frontispiece title page publisher details details only on spine. It does have printers name Thomas Davison who printed for John Murray. It is approx 5.5in by 8.75in. Gilt edges dark brown leather sky blue end pages same quality of paper as the book pages. Page count from fly leaf preface would be page vii and the next page as stated is page viii implying no missing pages. The book is in extremely good condition for its age leather bound with gilt shelf wear to the boards binding is tight with gilt edges It has only the first 2 cantos which were issued in 1812 cantos three and four appeared in 1816 and 1818 respectively.<br /><br /></p> hardcover

Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. Specific faults as follows: Tom Burke with some silverfish damage to the fore-edge of the frontispiece plate but not affecting image; Lord Kilgobbin missing rear free end paper; Dodd Family small strip missing from lower edge of half-title page not nearly affecting text. First Edition with engraved portrait frontispiece and engraved plate some light offsetting from frontispiece to title; nineteenth century half roan marbled boards marbled endpapers very neatly rebacked with old backstrip lettered in gilt laid down a remarkably bright crisp clean copy. Walker 1761-1810 Irish antiquary writer and translator was a founder member of the Royal Irish Academy. An acute asthmatic he spent much time in Italy indulging his lifelong love of Italian literature; among his most important works is 'Historical Memoir on Italian Tragedy' 1799. On his return to Ireland he settled in Bray to pursue his parallel passion for Irish antiquities resulting in many studies including 'Historical Memoirs of the Irish Bards' 1786. The present work was published posthumously with a lengthy preface by his brother and poems in his memory by Eyles Irwin. The fine portrait frontispiece and plate are engraved by Neagle after the author and Redmond respectively. The extended title reads: Memoirs of Alessandro Tassoni Author of La Secchia Rapita; or the Rape of the Bucket; interspersed with occasional Notices of his literary Contemporaries and a general Outline of his various Works. Also an Appendix containing biographical Sketches of Ottavio Rinuccini Galileo Galilei Gabriello Chiabrera Battista Guarini and an inedited Poem of Torquato Tasso with additional Notes and the Author's Preface by the late Joseph Cooper Walker. Moderate foxing to endpapers and reverse of some of the etchings but pages are bright and crisp. Up to 18 steel-plate tissue-guarded etchings per volume. Larger editions printed in Paris the smaller in London. The publication history of "The Keepsake" is complicated but these appear to be first editions. With 12 plates including 2 portraits of Rabelais and 10 scenes after the drawings of Devéria. Included also is the fold-out "carte du Chinonois" which according to Brunet is not found in all copies. Volume IX "les songes drolatiques" contains an additional title page a facsimile of the 1565 title and 120 full page woodcut grotesques reproduced by Thompson after those in the original edition Brunet. This edition includes commentaries and notes by Jacob Le Duchat Charles Esmangart Éloi Johanneau Volataire etc. Bound in period cats-paw calf boards with gilt double fillet borders and board edge decoration; expertly re-backed with the spine displaying gilt raised bands gilt labels and panels stamped in blind. Binding shows areas of rubbing and wear to the extremities. Interior pages contain mild to moderate scattered foxing heavier on several pages; an occasional lightly penciled note is present in the margins; a couple minor edge tears are neatly sealed. A chip 1 cm wide x 5mm deep is located on the upper edge of p. 277 Vol. VIII. This edition of Rabelais oeuvres contains notes by many past commentators.
