Although attributed here to Beaumont and Fletcher later scholarship increasingly favours authorship by Fletcher and Massinger. The play one of the finest Restoration comedies was first performed in 1622 with the first licensed edition following in 1647. Small stain on title page. Bound in period papered boards or faux-vellum rubbed. A piece of paper covering is missing from bottom rear board. An old receipt for purchase of the book dated 1925 is loosely inserted. Johann Jacob Breitinger 1701-1776 Influential Swiss-German literary critic whose writings along with those of Johann Jacob Bodmer helped to inspire a transition from Baroque to Modern German Literature. In 1740 Breitinger published his "critische Dichtkunst" 2 vols a direct challenge to the classical viewpoint of leading Leipzig critic Johann Christoph Gottsched. Breitinger argued contrary to Gottsched that the poets passion should not be hindered by artificial rules i.e. rhym. The feud which ensued with Breitinger and Bodmer on the one side and Gottsched on the other helped to make way for writers such as Schlegel and Lessing. Breitinger followed up his 1740 work with further writings. In 1744 he anonymously published his "Verteidigung der schweizerischen Muse" a defense of Albrecht von Hallers nature poetry. Mathews 18 Strand London 1791. 2 parts in one vol. 12mo. on laid paper with an engraved frontispiece and 8 engraved plates some mild age-staining rather heavier on frontispiece and some plates contemporary name on title; strongly and attractively bound in early nineteenth-century half roan marbled boards tooled in gilt back with four flat bands elaborately tooled in gilt second compartment lettered in gilt red sprinkled edges a very good firm copy in well-preserved period binding. With three pages of hymns and single-page publisher's advertisement at rear. L6 has short tear not affecting text and neat repair at upper margin. The work is divided into two parts as often. Burder was a Congregationalist minister sometime active in Coventry who began life as an engraver but subsequently played an important role in the founding of the RTS. His edition of 'The Pilgrim's Progress' 1786 is the first to be divided into chapters and was frequently reprinted. This is apparently the second Coventry printing; we have a note of an earlier 1790 version issued by Luckman & Suffield. In the earlier issue the pagination is similar but the plates include a frontispiece to each part; here the number of plates remains the same but all are numbered for inclusion in the first part. The first edition with Grey's extensive notes and splendid plates engraved by Mynde after Hogarth. The frontispiece is engraved by Vertue after Soest. The present copy is almost certainly an Irish pirated version of Bentham's Cambridge edition of the same year. The list of subscribers includes several Irish booksellers who presumably resold the Cambridge edition. A clean copy with particularly sharp impressions of the plates. Complete with half-title; wanting one blank preliminary.Louis-Antoine Caraccioli 1723-1803 was a prolific writer of poetry history fiction and biography. Born in Paris he served as colonel to Augustus III King of Poland and Elector of Saxony and so travelled widely throughout Europe. Despite close ties to both Louis XV and Louis XVI he managed to survive the Revolution though eventually he died in penury. The broad thematic range of his works makes him interesting to scholars of manners and many other subjects. He is best known among bibliophiles for two publications printed with coloured inks: Le livre de quatre couleurs 1757 and Le livre à la mode 1759 But the full list of his works is much longer 'trop fécond' complains the ungenerous Nouvelle Biographie Générale and many of them are of interest. The present work was first published in Paris by Nyon earlier in the same year. It remained popular throughout the eighteenth century and was translated into English as 'The Language of Reason' in 1802. This edition the first non-French issue is scarce. This copy was formerly in the library of Lord John Townshend with his printed early nineteenth century book-label on front paste-down of all three volumes. His printed press-label in present on all three front paste-downs superseded by a MS press-mark on front free endpaper versos.Published as vols. 19-21 of Hawkesworth's edition of the 'Works' but the letters are complete in themselves. Whilst made-up sets are not uncommon it is pleasing to see an original set in this crisp state. The bibliography of the several Hawkesworth editions is complex. Teerink pp.80-83 distinguishes no fewer than seven separate stages of publication which he summarises in an invaluable table p.104.The 'fifth edition' present here is the Large Crown Paper issue of the Small Octavo edition.The original owner was probably the politician Lord John Townshend 1757-1833. Bright crisp copy of the first collected edition of the poetry of James I 1394-1437 which includes THE FIRST PUBLICATION OF 'THE KINGIS QUAIR'. Usually ascribed to the year 1423 James I's masterpiece 'The Kingis Quair' is a vivid love-dream allegory composed in Early Scots and marks the outset of the golden age of Scottish literature. Often referred to as the first 'Scottish Chaucerian' poem it acknowledges the influence of the author of 'Canterbury Tales'. The work is transcribed from the only known MS Bodleian Arch. Selden B.24 foll.192-211 which itself is dated to 1488 or shortly after.The volume also contains the poem Christ's Kirk of the Green the editor's Dissertation on the Life and Writings of King James I and the Dissertation on Scottish Music.
