Hudibras follows the exploits of Knight Sir Hudibras satirising the Civil War and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. A staunch Royalist Butler evidently enjoys his satire which fiercely criticises the Roundheads and particularly the Puritanical elements of the Interregnum.
