Berquin did not want his work to contain fairy tales or imaginative literature. He wrote stories consisting of events that might happen to children in their everyday lives. He envisioned childhood reading as a familial exercise which is why some of his 'stories' are actually plays with parts for all family members to read. In a half calf binding. Externally excellent condition. Slight rubbing to boards. Hinges are slightly strained but firm. Small booksellers label to front pastedown states Alexander Day of Birmingham. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. Prior owner's inscription to title page. Ribbon inscription present.
