Minute nick at top of upper hinge and another at bottom of lower hinge tiny bump to top corner of upper cover gilt bright one faint French inscription dated 1852 on front endpaper another English dated 1920 occasional slight foxing mainly on pages near plates 1 small pale spot to background of frontispiece. A very good tight clean bright copy. An uncommon edition with its decorative binding 12 lithographic plates and 100 charming vignettes. Volume 1 has slightly chipped spine tail and volume 4 slightly chipped at head. Pencil notes rear pastedown of volume 1. Volume 3 has worm holes inside front board and first few pages. All pages bright and clean. French text. <br/><br/>Arnaud Berquin 1747-1791 was a French children's author. This is his most famous work first published 1782-3. It was also translated into English albeit bowdlerised by Mary Stockdale and published in London in 1783-4 by Mary's father John Stockdale. The work remained popular until the middle of the nineteenth century. Berquin's stories consisted of events that might happen to children in their everyday lives - they did not contain fairy tales or other imaginative literature. His books envision childhood reading as a familial exercise; for example some of his "stories" are actually plays with parts for every member of the family. J. Stockdale et al hardcover
