Small 4to: 1220pp. There are at least two issues: the first Macdonald 13.a.i lacks the Latin lines at the end. ESTC R17608. Pforzheimer 331. Ashley Library II pp. 84-85. Dryden's unsparing invective against the Whigs prefaced by a vigorous and plainspoken prose "Epistle to the Whigs." In 1681 the Whigs had a medal struck in Poland the Earl of Shaftesbury's head in profile on the obverse the sun rising over the Tower of London on the reverse to commemorate the release of one of their most prominent leaders who had been held in the Tower on charges of treason for opposing the succession of the Catholic James to the throne. It was the perfect prompt for Dryden's mock-heroic satire: "Of all our Antick Sights and Pageantry / Which English Ideots run in crowds to see / The Polish Medall bears the prize alone: " In fact most of "Dryden’s masterpieces were written in the 1680s after the Titus Oates Plot had driven the nation into hysteria against the Catholic minority with the result that thousands were imprisoned and a number including Dryden’s cousin Lord Howard were executed. From the start Dryden ridiculed the Plot fomented by the radical Whigs with all the civilized disdain he was capable of in The Spanish Fryar 1680 Absalom and Achitophel 1681 and The Medall 1682." This political satire serves as John Dryden's response to the Whigs' decision to strike a medal to celebrate the acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of high treason. A fierce attack the poem criticises the Whigs who supported Shaftesbury and was part of a public dispute that involved Thomas Shadwell's counter-poem 'The Medal of John Bayes'. Dryden was appointed England's first Poet Laureate and was a dominating literary figure of Restoration England so much to the point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. The first English edition of this work which was originally published in Latin. 'De Art Graphica' was written during du Fresnoy's Italian sojourn and is regarded as a critical treatise on the practice of the art with general advice to students. This is a prose translation of the poem by John Dryden. ESTC reference no: R18532 In addition to Fresnoy's original work Dryden has included an original preface analysing the parallel between paintin and poetry and a short account of the most eminent painters both ancient and modern. The biographical account has a separate date title page with the imprint 'printed for W.Rogers.' on page 227. The register is continuous. Rebound in a very smart full calf binding. One leaf C4 pp. 15-16 in `The Life' has a 9 cm horizontal closed tear near the bottom edge. The top of the running title on p. 43 G2r is shaved. Otherwise some mild age-staining and spotting throughout and in very good condition overall. This was the next to the last of Dryden's plays to be produced. Owing to Dryden's illness the fifth act of the play was completed by Thomas Southerne. The life of Cleomenes was translated from Plutarch by Thomas Creech. It is believed that the revival of some of Shakespeare's Roman plays about this time turned the attention of both playwrights and public to classical themes. Also present are the Prologue and the Epilogue. The earliest copies lack these leaves but an unsigned leaf was inserted after A4 headed "Prologue to the OPERA Spoken by Mr. Betterton." H2 was cancelled and a new leaf headed H2v: The EPILOGUE. Spoken by Mrs. Bracegirdle the word FINIS being transferred from H2 to H2v. The text block shows some aging and light staining; it is finely bound in full crushed crimson morocco unsigned but reminiscent of Sangorski: Spine in six compartments with raised bands intricately tooled in gilt; gilt rules on the boards; gilt inner dentelles; endpapers of crimson Victorian cloth in a linen effect. Top edge gilt. The text has been bulked out with several pages of blank paper in the rear. A nice copy of the scarce first edition in a fine binding. Dryden's 'King Arthur' owes little to the Arthur of history of romance. The play centers around a battle with Oswald a Saxon leader which Arthur wins. He also wing the faire but blind Emmeline whose sight is restored by Merlin. The play was first performed at the Queen's Theatre with music by Purcell and marks the likely beginning of a rekindling of interest in King Arthur and other things monarchial after their suppression by Cromwell and the Commonwealth.
