Vol. XII carefully rebacked; Vol. XIV with cracking joints. Spines are nice. Vol I portrait frontis of Dryden has foxing and offset to title page. Balance of that and all the other volumes are clean except for some offset foxing to end matter from the colored endpapers. Provenance - contemporary armorial bookplate of John Henry Sparke Rev John Henry Sparke bought Gunthorpe Hall which included land at Mattishall and Mattishall Burgh. 1854. Text block edges are marbled. Dryden was an English poet literary critic translator and playwright who was appointed England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. 12He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden.
