"Virgil is the only complete representative of the deepest sentiment and the highest mood of his countrymen and of his time. In his pastoral and didactic poems he gives a living voice to the whole charm of Italy in the Aeneid to the whole glory of Rome. He was in the maturity of his powers at the most critical epoch of the national life one of the most critical epochs in the history of the world. Dryden indeed was one of the first authors to draw a 'significant advance' for his works from Tonson which caused many bitter arguments but in the end Tonson and Dryden were a powerful team publishing many works previously only found in Greek and Latin editions. Dryden besides being a popular playwright in his time made these works popular amongst the rising middle class who without classical training in Greek or Latin were omitted from reading the works of Virgil and others that Dryden seemed to crank out in record time for Tonson's presses. 1697033272<p>London : Jacob Tonson 1697 A good copy of the large paper 1st edition with 103 full page engravings. This is the first illustrated edition of Dryden's famous translations of Virgil's works completed in 1696. The illustrations are spectacular - each dedicated to a subscriber who donated 5 guineas for the privilege. This copy has 2 bookplates on the front pastedown endpaper. The oldest is of William Trumbull Esq 1708-1760 who was the son of Sir William Trumbull and inherited his estate. Sir William 1639-1716 was a Privy Counsellor and friend of John Dryden. This is certainly Sir William's subscription copy for which he paid 5 guineas and has the plate opposite page 125 in the Georgics section dedicated to him. He was particularly fond of the Aeneid and Dryden notes on the second page of his Postscript to the Reader that 'If the last Aeneid shine amongst its fellows 'tis owing to the Commands of Sir William Trumbull one of the Principal Secretaries of State who recommended it as his favourite to my Care: and for his sake particularly I have made it mine.' It likely stayed within the estate which became the Marquess of Downshire Estate until purchase for the Fox Pointe Library - their bookplate is the second of the two. The panelled calf boards are contemporary and in good condition with later reinforcement and some wear to corners. The spine with raised bands and title label is later but is degrading at the ends and there is splitting at the joints the boards are attached. Page edges are reddened. Contents: 3 initial blanks; frontispiece by M Vander Gucht a Flemish engraver working in England; rubricated title page; dedication to the Right Hon Lord Clifford 4pp; Life of Vergil 16pp; plate; Preface to the Pastorals 12pp; Poems to Dryden 5pp; Lists of Subscribers which also provide a plate index 4pp; Pastorals p 1-48 with 10 plates; Dedication to Earl of Chesterfield 5pp; Essay on the Georgics 6pp; Georgics pp 49-147 with 20 plates; Dedication 45pp; Aeneis pp 201-619 with 71 plates; Postscript to the Reader p621-623; Notes and Observations p625-640; Finis; 3 final blanks. The contents are very clean. The majority of the text and plates are on very good quality paper which has stayed white however some sections of text and some plates circa 18 are brown toned. There are a couple of paper flaws - eg side margin to plate 1 of Pastorals; side edge plate at p 63; a couple of tears - first page of subscribers has lost the bottom corner; small tear in the gutter of plate at p 20; small edge tear plate at p 61; and a printing fault at the top of the plate at p 56. Born in Cisalpine Gaul Virgil Publius Vergillius Maro 70-19 BCE published his first collection of poems Eclogues around 38 BCE and the Georgics in 29 BCE. Both titles illustrating the greatness of the Roman Empire were widely read due to "the technical perfection of his verse" Oxford Companion to Classical Literature after Virgil had become part of the poetic circle around Maecena giving Virgil accress to Octavian the future emperor Augustus.<br /> <br /> Musing the idyllic life of shepards in northern Italy in the Pastorals meditating on the nature of agriculture in the Georgics and in his great epic the Aneid following in the tradition of Homer. While the Pastorals were still likened to the poetry of other poets the Georgics were considered unprecedented. The inscriptions on Virgils tombstone "cesini pascua rura duces" I sang of farms fields and heroes captures the scope of these three works. A bright first English edition of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's narrative poem which provides his observations on the art of painting. The first English edition of this work which was originally published in Latin. 'De Art Graphica' was written during du Fresnoy's Italian sojourn and is regarded as a critical treatise on the practice of the art with general advice to students. This is a prose translation of the poem by John Dryden. ESTC reference no: R18532 In addition to Fresnoy's original work Dryden has included an original preface analysing the parallel between paintin and poetry and a short account of the most eminent painters both ancient and modern. The biographical account has a separate date title page with the imprint 'printed for W.Rogers.' on page 227. The register is continuous. Rebound in a very smart full calf binding. Top text block edge darkened. The pages show a wide range of foxing levels from very light or sporadic to heavy. Most of the plate are well-struck and clean but there are multiple plates showing oxidation or light foxing while others look brand new. No marginalia. A few instances of marginal worming mostly to bottom page margins. Signs of handling - smudges some ink blots some creasing and multiple bent page corners a few small margin tears. Offsetting from the plates in multiple instances. Several instances of light water dampening along the top margins of multiple leaves of text. Some pencil writing on the endpapers and blanks and Kallendorf's ex libris sticker on the FFEP. <br /> <br /> All in all this is the second edition of the definitive English Virgil one of the greatest works of poetry in English and one of the most beautiful productions of a literary work in English with all of its astounding illustrations intact. It was followed by translations into French 1668 English prose 1695 German 1699 Italian 1713 and Dutch 1733. Du Fresnoy opens his poem by declaring that 'As poetry shall be like a painting so should painting be like poetry'. Beauty should be interpreted in different ways - as may be seen in such famous ancient statues as the Antinous the Hercules the Venus the dying Gladiator.<br> Besides Dryden's translation of Du Fresnoy's poem the present volume includes a translation of the Remarks with which Roger de Piles accompanied his French version of the poem 1668. Occasional light toning but good margins with no trimming of the text; very good. <br /> <br /> § Fourth edition of this tragedy in rhyming couplets first acted in June 1669 and published in 1670. It is based on the legend of Saint Catherine of Alexandria who was put to death by the Roman Emperor Maximinus the "tyrant" of the title. Macdonald 126; Wing D-2403; ESTC R3993. ◆Binding a little worn with rubbing to joints and extremities a little loss at head and tail of spine and some general soiling otherwise intact and perfectly sound; contents a little browned scattered and mostly light foxing a large but light dampstain across most leaves top margin trimmed a little close other minor imperfections but despite these faults a good copy of a very rarely seen work.<br/> <br/> This is the only dramatic work written by Dryden's second son 1667/8-1701 who also produced a translation of Juvenal and a travel account. Macdonald 84c; Wing D-2391; ESTC R4117. ◆A light diagonal dampstain at upper corner covering a little less than a quarter of the page sometimes quite faint never serious title and final page a bit soiled other minor imperfections internally but still a very pleasing copy the lustrous binding with almost no wear and the text with none of the major problems normally seen in copies of Restoration plays.<br/> <br/> From a distinguished collection this is a copy of a work of value not only as an adaptation of Shakespeare but also as an early critical examination of the Bard's language written by the most famous playwright of the Restoration period. Originally written around 1602 and first published in 1609 "Troilus and Cressida" has long been considered one of Shakespeare's more "problematic" plays. Seeking to update and improve the work to appeal to modern audiences Dryden revised the language deepened certain themes and leaned into the tragedy of the play with Cressida falsely accused of being unfaithful to Troilus and killing herself as punishment. In Shakespeare's version Cressida in fact does betray Troilus but lives. Of equal interest to the play itself is the prefatory essay "The Grounds of Criticism in Tragedy" in which Dryden offers a critique of Shakespeare's language and lays out his reasons for revision: "because the Play was Shakespear's and that there appear'd in some places of it the admirable Genius of the Author; I undertook to remove that heap of Rubbish under which many excellent thoughts lay wholly bury'd." Dryden 1631-1700 was deemed "the father of English criticism" by Johnson and Day notes that this essay is also "the first significant and detailed analysis in English of Aristotle's concept of tragedy." Our finely bound copy comes from the library of W. A. Foyle co-founder with his brother of the famous Foyle's Bookshop in Charing Cross Road. The three large Foyle sales at Christie's held in 2000 were a bibliophilic highlight of the new century and the sum of $19 million for which William Foyle's personal library sold in July set a record for private European collections.
